I concur about reaching your hand under the hen to collect the eggs. It is a little startling though when you reach under there and grab a chicken snake. I’ve done it more than a few times.

A friend at work noticed his egg production had dropped. Never could figure it out. I got 4 golf balls. Told him to number, put them in different laying boxes. Within a few days, three balls were gone, a slow moving snake was found. They swallow them whole, then break them later. Unable to pass them, slows them down.

Is Tractor Supply a good place to get chicks? Do they have a good variety of egg laying eggs? Will I be able to find the breeds I am looking for there?

If you want to drive a bit, my friend might have 3-4 to give you. If you decide, I’ll call to check.

well that depends on what you are looking for and what they have . Most of the time those places will have sex links which are fine for home coops. If you want something else you may have to look around. The best we had were new hampshire reds…great looking chickens, heavy layers and healthy

I'll have to bring this thread back up whenver I get around to building the coop. May be a summer thing or a next year thing if I can't get around to it but I would definitely be interested when the time comes.

I think I am looking for Australorps, Plymoth Rocks, and Buff Orpingtons. These seem to be the ones most everyone agrees are docile, quiet, and heavy egg layers.

barred rocks are great backyard chickens. The roosters are especially beautiful in case you want one. Great layers

we had NH reds, barred rocks and black star sex links

is there a diference between Plymoth Rocks and Barred Rocks? they look very similar and I can't tell if they are different breeds or just different names for the same breed.

And to that end, I'll bet you'll never eat those chickens when they get too old to lay eggs. You'd likely break that little girl's heart killing "her" chickens.

Tractor supply is a good place to get chicks. Not always a wide variety. The one in plaquemine usually has (when they have any) red stars (sex link and absolute laying machines) and maybe 2-3 other types. They usually don5 last, though. Especially this year I would think. Best to ask someone there what day their chicks come in. I think weekly till Easter. If you are looking for a particular breed you will probably have to order from a hatchery. Both places have a minimum of six chicks, though.
