Asbestos, asbestos, asbestos - it's put a kink in my kitchen reno

And it's not the fun kind of kink.
We just demo'd the cabinets in our kitchen, and we discovered a small patch of 9x9 tiles. The house was built in 1958, so we're pretty sure they have asbestos.
When pulling up the laminate near an air vent, it seems like plywood underneath the lauan. I'm not sure if the floors were stripped to the subfloors at some point, but I really thought we didn't have 9x9 tiles underneath. But apparently we might.
My goal was to remove the laminate and the lauan to help with the transition when installing new hardwoods. The hardwoods will match the other rooms leading into the kitchen. I've already purchased the hardwoods.
The new plan is to lay the hardwoods on top of the existing laminate and staple them in.
Will those staples disturb any asbestos tiles enough to cause a health risk? My thought is no and my contractor agrees. However, my wife is completely freaking out.

Take her on a vacation while that is being done, never mention that the tiles were not removed, and delete this post.

it’s likely if asbestos is present it’s in the adhesive not the tile. In any case, do not disturb the tiles. Just lay right back over them it’s done every day

I would say no but I’m no expert so maybe google a bit and show your wife the results.

Google and ChatGPT both lead to bullshite. The EPA’s language says any potential risk to disturb any bit of asbestos is a health hazard to be avoided.
But from what I can tell, even a tiny bit in an isolated moment doesn’t pose that much of a risk. That’s even if the staples would send any of it into the air.

As long as you are not grinding, sawing, or sanding the asbestos containing material I would consider the risk very low. It will not all of the sudden become airborne and be able to be inhaled.
Lay flooring over it and move on is my advice.

Man, that shite is blown out of proportion. Just do what you have to do exercising reasonable care and y’all will be fine. Every house and every building built prior to the 80’s con trains asbestos and is painted with lead paint. No need to panic or even do anything unreasonable.

As long as it’s not made airborne by being frayed or anything like that, it’s ok. I was in a very similar situation, we came across some sketchy 9”x9” tile and got it tested. It came back positive for asbestos. We got advised by an expert we were ok. Reassured us it was harmless unless fibers released. You can cover it up and it’s never gonna hurt anyone. If you wanted to rip it up, you could wet it(to trap fibers from being released into the air) and hand strip it up while wearing mask but I’d get advice from an expert if you wanted to do that. They do it all the time and if they know beforehand it’s no issue.
