Anyone ever use Behr Deck stain?
I had a new deck built last year. I finally got around to protecting it a few weeks ago. I didnt really want a colored stain. Just keep it clear.

I purchased Behr deck stain "clear". It wasnt really clear. It has some color to it but that is not the issue. Its been about 3 weeks now and the decking is still very "sticky". Like it has not dried completely. Its not marking up or anything but its sticky to walk on

I applied the stain to the railings first then did the floor. I used a pump up sprayer to spray it on the railings then used a 2 1/2" brush to smooth it out on the railings. On the floor, we sprayed it on then used a roller to smooth it out. Went on fine but just have not dried yet. Kind of concerning

This is the product I used.

Anyone have a drying issue with deck stains before?

I used Behr deck over and while I haven’t had any issues there have been some lawsuits from people who claim it didn’t adhere properly.

Honestly I don’t have a deck stain to recommend as I started with Thompson’s and that led to me needing deck over within 6 years of installing the deck haha.

Thats why I didnt use it. I have used Thompsons in the past but honestly, it did not last more than 5 or 6 months. It was clear but just was not worth the effort to put it on the deck. The product I bought said it was good for 4 years or so. I did search around the web and there were some discussions about humidity slowing the drying process and it has been humid here but its getting close to a month now.

I have used the solid one on my fence about 3 years ago and it has held up exceptionally well.

It did leave a sort of sticky residue for a while, but it has gone away over time.

I never buy stain at an actual store, practically no one carries the good stuff.

Anytime I need to stain-restain, I use this website for ratings and reviews:

Deck Stain Help

I last used Restore-A-Deck and found it to be one of the best I've used.

Similar to what my Mother-in-law experienced at her old townhouse. When she bought it, she had someone come in and pressure wash, then apply a stain and seal product. Also, it had boards nailed down instead of screwed, and some were popping out. The guy just removed the nails and put new nails back in. Of course a couple of years later the nails in other spots started backing out. That is when she used the deck over. It was a Redwood color, and ended up drying to almost an Orange finish. Plus it was tacky to walk on for a couple of months. It did hold up well, she just wasn't pleased with the color, since it was supposed to be a deeper red tone and looked orange.

The only positive about it, is that it swayed me from doing that to my deck. We put down composite boards instead. They're not as maintenance free as they advertise, but part of that is all the pines in my yard dropping straw on there. Still it just takes a light pressure wash once a year and it looks great again.

I wont be in this house much longer. Maybe 2 years. I wanted to protect the new deck and not have to do it again. If the tackiness goes away in a month or so, I can live with that. I did want a clear finish but can live with what I have. Its not bad, its just not clear

I used the Behr cleaner to clean the deck before we applied the stain but it was crap. I ended up using a pressure washer which was best. Let it dry for 2 days then apply the finish. The tacky feeling just makes me feel like we did something wrong but it appears we did it the way they recommend.

Yeah, even when I have put a clearcoat type sealer on furniture we've made, it changes the color slightly. Hard to get something truly clear because of the way the wood soaks it in.

I've used one their products, similar looking can, but it's their penetrating oil version and I've been pleased with it. Maybe some tackiness for a day but afterwards it's been good. I did prep the deck before applying and I also put a second coat on it.

I have a large deck and I've been using TWP deck stain/products. They hold up longer than the traditional brands in my experience.

Behr Deck Over is great for decks with a little age. It covers wonderfully & lasts for numerous years. No more waterproofing or staining!
