Anyone ever built a pole barn DIY (approx. 36x16 total, 16x24 enclosed)?

Need some storage area at my new house and won’t be building the shed I really want for several years. Per my calculations, I can build a 16x24 (like the link below) plus a 12x16 extension in the front for about $4000. No cement, will go with dirt floor or 610 limestone. Will put two sliding doors for the front. Figure in the future I can add a lean to awning for more storage. This would be to store an old tractor, lawn and garden equipment, other outside equipment, etc. Anyone ever built something like this?

No, not extacly.

But I have built a pavilion that size with a metal roof.

I can tell you one thing for sure, you are gonna need help. Probably two friends or relatives I would guess.

Thanks!

You might not have the answer on this one but should the whole thing be treated lumber or just the parts that will be exposed to weather?

Just the parts touching the ground needs to be treated. Spray paint everything else.

Sawmill shack.

I wouldnt let the treated post touch the ground. Pour some concrete and the use a base anchor like this. They have several different types. But you wanna keep the wood off the ground. Even treated stuff will rot and invite termites if it's on or in the groind.

As far as using untreated or treated I would probably go ahead and use treated since it is going to be an open shed with no interior walls to cover the frame. But it would probably be fine either way. Definitely use treated for anything exposed to the weather though, and stain it with a sealer. You could paint it too, but that thomspson's or Olympic spray on stain and sealer is so much easier to do.

Eta: Also, as far as your 4x4 post go you are gonna be hard pressed to find them untreated anyway. Your ceiling joist and rafters could be untreated though.

Oh, and if you've never done anything like that before the most important part is going to be getting your posts exactly where they need to be and level on all sides. Spend extra time measuring, leveling, and squaring up. A plumb bob can come in pretty handy too on that job.

Yeah, I guess that's possible. I just got done sanding and repainting my deck... so I'm pro stain at the moment. Lol

Oh, and another note. Whether you paint or stain, wait about 4 months to do it and let the wood dry out.
