Wanting to fence in about 3.5 acres with a nice looking fence to put a couple horses in. We are contemplating vinyl, treated wood plain, and treated wood painted black or dark brown. Anybody have any input on which is better maintenance wise, wood vs vinyl? opinions on Which look better? Colors that hold up best? Ball park cost, reputable contractor around NELA would be helpful. This is a project I wanted to do 5-6 years down the road and do it myself, when I had time. But it has been determined that i need to do it sooner smh

Not cheap. I have helped on a very short run of 3-rail at the entrance to some of our hunting land. I’ve also watched some YouTube vids of a guy building a long, nice 4-rail recently. All wood. Stoney Ridge Farmer, if you’re interested. I know this doesn’t answer any of your questions.

Just gonna throw out a number, but probably be prepared for $20k +.

I can't answer any of your questions except to say it will very expensive and if you do wood you will have to run a hot wire so the horses can't make toothpicks out of it.

Face it in wood on the one side you see and make the other 3 barber wire, treat the wood with burnt motor oil.

I would be concerned of the strength of the vinyl fence with keeping a horse in. I really dont know any numbers but I would assume wood would be the stronger of the two and more likely to keep a horse in.

Horses are not normally hard to keep in, they will escape though a gap but dont put pressure on fences like cattle will.

I bought an old horse farm in Folsom, middle of horse country. I will have about a mile of horse fence to replace in the next few years. The fence that is on my place and almost every farm in the area is a single rail with no climb wire underneath. At least a dozen or more farms in my immediate vicinity, I don't think I have seen anything else. It looks like this...

Vinyl fences look to be very expensive and there are a lot of stories of them splintering/shattering because of UV exposure. I've all but thrown out the idea of vinyl fencing.

There is a product that people seem to like, Centaur fencing. It comes in rolls and doesn't seem hard to install. It's supposed to be safe for horses, it has enough give to prevent injury and is supposed to be very durable. The price doesn't seem to be unreasonable. It's even available with a hot wire in it.

I'm thinking about doing the roadway in 3 or 4 rail wood and all of the interior fencing in Centaur.

We have the vinyl across road frontage and along driveway and its plenty sturdy. Never had an issue with horses getting out and we have one that will force his way through an electrified barb wire if he sees a bucket of food on the other side. Went with vinyl for longevity. Hope to never redo it at least in my parents life time. Its currently 15 or so years old, only maintenance is pressure wash for mildew.

We have basically what amounts to a fence with a top bar, and the vertical bars at ~10 ft spacing made of old pipe. Then we have eyes with cables to make 3 runners under that.

A nice looking fence I've seen is round treated wood post with pipe rails. A horse might run right through a plastic fence, baw.

I removed some fence just like that no climb wire fence in your pic. Every damned post was set in concrete and every damned post was rotted at the top of the concrete - probably 35-40 years old. That is a good looking fence when kept in good shape though.
