My house is in the Dayton, Ohio area so we're talking about a tall fescue, perennial rye, and bluegrass seed mix. My front and sides are sodded, and they are coming along nicely. My question is about the backyard that was seeded.

Some areas are coming in nicely, and some areas are thin, and others are sparse/nothing and that's too be expected. Should I just water, water, water, and mow at 3" for now or should I try to control weeds also? There is some crabgrass and sedge with some dandelions and other weeds popping up. I'm spot spraying right now, but not sure if I should even worry about it right now. Would I be better off just overseeding the area in the fall and then apply a preemergent in the winter?

If you were in my shoes, what would your plan be?

What is the front and sides sodded with? I would treat the weeds in those type grasses. They are so easy to seed compared to southern grasses so any slight damage can be repaired. I would not put down a pre emergent though so that way you can overseed the back.

tall fescue, and the backyard was seeded by the same company. Sod looks great and minimal weeds that I’m treating.

So you’d go ahead and treat the weeds in the seeded area then and then oversees when it’s time?

I would and that recommendation would change based on grass type. Bermuda or centipede I wouldn't because that grass does not germinate well. I'd keep the herbicides off of it and be thankfully for the grass that did germinate. Rye, fescue, etc kill the weeds. Seeding those grasses has a much higher germination rate and I'd be less concerned about messing something up.

appreciate it. I’ll try to kill the weeds, then aerate the lawn and overseed in late August/early September per the guidance for this area.

The grass seed is 85% tall fescue, 10% Kentucky bluegrass, and 5% perennial rye. Not worried about the rye, so I'm focused on the tall fescue. It seems like the tall fescue and bluegrass are handled the same from what I've read, but I'm no expert.

I live in South Bend, IN so similar region, little colder I think. I would Tenacity the shite out of it now and water heavily going into fall.

Come labor day aerate and overseed. Put down more tenacity but without the surfactant, and plan to do it again before winter sets in.

For tenacity, where do y'all purchase it from? And what type sprayer do you find is best for your lawn? Any surfactant you'd recommend?
