Welp, my dreams of venting into the wall and then up into the attic then outside have been burst - there's a wall and a door jamb above the top plate where the in-wall vent would have to emerge above the kitchen.

That said, we'll now have to vent directly up from the cabinets and build a box around it - my question is - what's the consensus on the size of the box?

- Just large enough to encase the 6" round duct?
- Large enough to match up with the cabinet doors?
- Something else?

What a pain.

Here's a photo of where it will go.

Cut out the doors and build a big hood vent. That is what we did.

Before

After

We’ve already got this vent purchased and ready to go. That little gap in the tile is measured for it.

That wouldn’t look good IMO

The vent you have picked out doesn’t look like it will stick out nearly enough to actually be useful. Might not even be large enough to pass code depending on the code in your area.

Did you do a cabinet upgrade by just replacing the doors and painting?

New doors, paint and hardware.

I agree with this.

Not to be rude to the OP, but what you are suggesting doing is what would be done in a cheap apartment, not a custom kitchen.

The hood should be substantial from both a functional standpoint and aesthetically.

Looks good, I want to do the same.

I'm not sure how easy it is to remove or change the upper and lower trim on them though, it doesn't appear you had any lower trim and didn't need to replace the upper?

If you had needed to replace the upper trim to a more modern look do you think that would have been difficult?

I shoulda added - it's a telescoping vent. Some European shite that matches the range. Here's a photo of it extended

I am not sure what you mean.

The very top part of the cabinet that has the decorative bevels or whatever they're called.

Still not really following, but only the doors were replaced. Everything else is original and only repainted.

Can't find a better picture, but the decorative top part of the cabinet that protrudes out away from the flat part that the door is attached to.

I assume you mean this little molding. That was there, but would be easy to add.

Yes, but the whole piece from where you circled but also the section right above it. Could you have removed that as well?

Yes, that is just a molding.

Do it right and remove that cabinet and replace with one that goes to the ceiling (or a dedicated hood cabinet), or furr down that entire section above the cabinets with Sheetrock/wood. You’ll have to remove and replace the crown molding at the ceiling to the new furr down location, but it’ll be done right.

Do not try to box around the vent pipe only.

Nice

The reason I ask is because I have some nice solid wood cabinets in my older 1985 home and the cabinets themselves don't need to be replaced, but I would like to modernize them with new doors, fixtures, and paint.

On mine though they have some molding similar to yours but not quite as modern looking, they are somewhat rounded and older looking. I'd like to remove/replace that molding then paint and update fixtures. Was just curious how easy to remove/replace that molding would be. I'm guessing removing would be easy and then just nail the replacement back up and apply some sealant/caulk to hide the crack/gap between the cabinet and molding and then paint as one piece.

As for the painting did you do it yourself? And if so did you use a sprayer or a roller?

That is basically it. If you don’t have the big molding on top and your cabinets are all the same level I would look at extending them to the ceiling. It really does change the look for the better, and isn’t really that hard.

I hired a painter and he did a shitty job.

If we furr down, the moulding on the cabinets stay, correct?

And what about cabinets on the other side of the kitchen? Furr those down to in order to match?

I have zero interior design skills.
