what's the consensus on the size of the box?

they come in 2 heights and 2 widths

18" or 15" high and 30" or 36" widths

yes go with cabinets, they look better and are easier to clean. the space inside is pretty much useless after running the duct through it but i just use it for keeping all my appliance paperwork

Here's ours.. it's boxed in via sheetrock. PS - the walls look pink in this picture, they're cream.

This, for sure. Easy as pie. Looks good too. This is how my vent is done.

That is how I did mine when I lived in Baton Rouge. I wanted a commercial looking vent.

What's that, about 15"? That's alot less intrusive looking than I expected... neat looking install.

Our kitchen is not real big, so we wanted to stay away from bulkier hoods and not sure how cabinets to the ceiling would look - like would they close down the room even more without the area above the cabinets open?

Cabinets to the ceiling will make the ceilings appear higher.

The hood is 48" wide and 23" deep.
The sheetrock box thing is approx 20" wide and 12.5" deep
