AC problem. Compressor not running

2 year old American standard compressor isn't running but the fan on the compressor is. Is this likely a capicitor? I thought the fan wouldn't work either if it was.

Make sure that your drip pan is not full of water. You have a switch in the pan that will turn things off if water gets in it. Clean out your drip tube as well with bleach monthly, especially in the heat of the summer.

Shouldn't be. I wired it up myself after the installer did a shite job. When one of the switches is tripped the whole unit turns off. Everything is running including both fans except outside compressor

Could be the starting capacitor, or maybe wiring connections at the compressor. Had the same issue with mine years ago.

Ok then, yes that sounds like a capacitor.

I had the same problem a few weeks back.
It was the compressor side of a "dual capacitor."
Changed the capacitor and fixed the problem.

Well shite. 5pm and need a 27L880 capacitor.

27L880 capacitor.
That's not the numbers you need.
Is the unit still under warranty?

Could be the capacitor - dual run capacitor is in essence 2 capacitors in a single unit, so one side can be functional, I.e., fan in your case, and the other side, the herm (=compressor) can be bad, or vice versa. You have a multimeter with a mF function (microfarad) - easily checked. Watch a couple YouTube videos.

I got it to start up. Turned off my nest schedule to try to keep it on. 2 years old.

I’m not a HVAC tech nor have I ever owned a Nest thermostat, I do read HVAC-Talk Forum on nearly a daily basis during the summer and I can tell you that HVAC techs on that forum state without exception they see a host of issues with HVACs associated with NEST thermostats. One so far as to say he’ll put his kid though college for HVAC jobs associated with NEST.
Here is one thread of many I’ve read on that forum that mentions issues with NEST, you might want to read through it - be aware those that answer homeowner questions on HVAC issues on that site are only experienced licensed HVAC techs.
Seems as though they seldom see issues with Honeywell or Ecobee smart thermostats. Just food for thought.

Always, always have a spare capacitor on hand no matter how new a unit.

I have had the nest 5+ years I think with no problems. Brought it from my previous house. 3 AC systems.

That's a pretty common size cap. Hope you can locate a replacement. Take a picture of the wiring before you start disconnecting wires.
I've changed caps out over the years, but recently blew a fuse on a circuit board by touching the strap for the cap to a wire on the contactor (relay). Next time I will turn the thermostat off. Live and learn.
Two years old? Still under warranty?

I don't even remember. It's running for now but I assume it will crap out at some point and luckily I caught it at the beginning. Supposedly someone my wife knows is bringing one in the AM and I have one on order from Amazon. I've been telling myself to get an extra but put it off. Not sure of the American standard/trane warranty. I called the 1-800 and put in my zip code and it said it was connecting me to a local dealer. The # is out of service for the Nola area. The guys that put it in were idiots so I do not want to call them.

Yikes, you should have a disconnect located by the unit to kill power.

"Yikes, you should have a disconnect located by the unit to kill power."
---
I pulled the disconnect, so no 220V. But the thermostat was still on and I shorted out the 24V that closes the relay. Thus the fuse blew.

Cannot be stressed enough.
I have spare capacitor and relay. Each around $10.
Now, do I buy a spare circuit board that's about $150???
