Today, my central air conditioner condenser suddenly started making a hell of a noise. I can best describe it as a very loud clicking about the same frequency as when a stick is hitting on the condenser fan. I turned the unit off for a while and when I turned it back on, the noise has disappeared.

Any idea what I was hearing?

Same thing happened to me once upon a time. Turned out to be a dead rat snake coiled up in the fan getting smacked.

Same here. Not sure what type of snake it was.

It must have crawled away after taking some shots to the head.

Similar situation for me but it didn't last too long - there were some lizard pieces scattered about . Go check and see what the fan may be hitting.

If the power flickers it can cause that. The thermostat should have a 5 min delay on it when the power goes out, but I’ve had the power flicker before and it was so brief that the thermostat didn’t start a delay. It takes time for pressure to equalize across the valve. If you don’t wait for the pressure to equalize, the compressor attempts to start against the high pressure and sounds horrible.

May have been something similar for you or AC short cycled and thermostat doesn’t have, or didn’t initiate a delay.

as long as it's not a grinding noise

that means the bearings are going bad on the fan motor

if it's concerning you, take the fan off and inspect it, it's not that hard to do on most units

Thanks to all who replied. Since it is no longer making the noise, I think I’ll pass on going out to look for an injured snake in the dark!

I’ll check on it first thing tomorrow morning and report back.

This is probably the culprit as it happens to me when my power goes out ever so briefly----- just long enough to kick off the TV's, make the lights flicker and the outside unit makes the exact same noise as the OP inquired about.

I just turn off the unit at the thermostat for a minute or so and then turn it back on and all is well.

Sounds like this turned into a dead animal in the condenser unit thread so here's my submission.

Eta:

Condenser/compressor, tomato/tomato, I'm retardo.

I checked a friends unit out once and I peeked into the condenser while the fan was running, a BF chicken snake rose up to meet me and got wrapped up in the fan. After pulling my drawers back out and killing the disconnect, I tossed my bud a nut driver and told him pests were on him.

Mine has been making some kind of weird howling/whistling sound outside and inside. Air is still COLD and have not noticed any decrease in performance or efficiency
