Unit is less than 5 years old. Had to have it charged this past July with $150 worth of refrigerant (in addition to the $75 service call). Here we are again, and the lines are frozen. Filter is clean. Factory warranty expires at the end of July.

I'm thinking I should go hard at the service folks and push for new evaporator coil?

Yes.

My question is really whether or not i should let some slapdick come out here and try to leak test and try to bill me for a bunch of labor that may or may not fix the problem, or should i go in guns blazin demanding replacement while ive got warranty left, and this has obviously been happening for a while

I know it is frustrating...but there is no use in being a tool. Just tell the folks that installed it what you are thinking, they understand the idea that you want a fully functional system before the warranty runs out. They deal with this kind of shite all of the time.

is the entire unit ( both condenser and evaporator) less than 5 years old? Not sure when it happened but they started building these coils with aluminum which is just impossible for most repairs guys to solder and fix, especially if it where copper elbows meet the aluminum straight runs. I have been doing the same thing for past 4 years but my unit is out of warranty. If you have warranty on entire system, you should not be paying for these charges and if it freezes, you have a bigger leak than mine. They put a pound of Freon each spring in mine but no freezing up.

Have them leak test it first. Mine did the same thing, they kept filling it with more freon, finally they leak tested it and couldn't find a leak. Had a second HVAC guy come out, and he said it was way overfilled with freon, and discovered the condenser was shot. Replaced that under warranty and never had another problem

And your luggage will end up in Alaska. You get more with sugar than with shite.

First you have a leak in the coil. If you want to thaw the lines turn the unit on heater and turn thermostat up and let it run for about an hour and they will thaw. That will get you a day or so while waiting for repair.

Then have a discussion and let them know this is ongoing and your warranty period is almost up and you need it fixed. No reason to blaze guns. Act professional and get treated accordingly.

I found it difficult to be calm at 1:00 in the morning after this has happened a couple times before.

Entire system was installed new in July 2014 (new construction).

I do tend to favor the guy who installed...I talked to him at 7:30 this morning and he was already up on a roof somewhere.

The guy who did the charge-up and leak test, with "no leak detected" last year....thats a different story...added 2.75 pounds of refrigerant (the new kind) and charged me 2 hours labor to be in the same boat 10 months later.

You say the coils are frozen. The filter is clean, but how about the coils themselves, are they clean? If not, that can cause it to freeze up.

But saying you already had refrigerant added last year indicates to me you have a leak somewhere. I've got an 25K BTU window unit I put in right after Katrina and have done nothing to it except clean the coils and keep the filter clean.

My inside central unit was from 92 and I replace my outside condenser unit in 06 after Katrina and NEVER had to put any refrigerant in it during the time it was working.

I just did replace the entire unit a month ago just to be safe as it was 27 years old and I didn't want to risk it going out in the summer months.

I would definitely push for a new coil.
