A/C short cycling

I installed a Nest thermostat in December. My old thermostat had wires connected to Y1, G, W1, RH, and a jumper wire to RC. Those wires were connected to the Nest (minus the jumper wire as there is a built in jumper wire) and all of the system tests passed minus the a/c as it was colder than 40 degrees outside and Nest won’t allow you to run the a/c. I had no issues with the system until February rolled around and the a/c began to short cycle. A common wire adapter was installed on the inside unit and the problem went away for about an hour when the system started to short cycle again. Only the inside unit is short cycling - outside runs continuously. I’ve had a maintenance man check the Freon and I’ve change the filter in the hallway. Nest customer service told me to try a different Nest to see if the device was the problem. I installed the new Nest and same issue kept happening. I put the old thermostat back on with the jumper wire and still the system is short cycling.
Before I call an HVAC company, I wanted to see if there was anything else I could do. If not, does anyone have an company or tech they recommend?

Can you swap back to your old (dumb)thermostat and see if it still short cycles?

Just FYI to anyone wanting to install a smart thermostat...
DO NOT INSTALL ONE WITHOUT A COMMON WIRE.
I learned this the hard way with a Nest and paid the price. Luckily it was just the thermostat, board, and contactor that needed to be replaced $$$. I have read up on people having issues with it short cycling the compressor to the point where it runs backwards and that's an immediate failure. The sad thing is Nest even has the installation procedure for a installation without a common.
Without the common wire, the nest uses the power on the "Y"&"Rc/h" to charge the battery. Some if the HVAC controllers see ANY power flowing between those terminals as a request for cooling and turns on the system....at that point there is no power for the nest to charge since the compressor is on and the nest stops power stealing and the hvac control board sees no power draw and turns off the system...at that point there is power available for the nest to charge and the cycle repeats.
If you do not have 5 wires don't install the nest.
Your nest thermostat is power stealing. Take it out before you have bigger issues. Install run a new 5 wire and make sure to hook up the common.
It is a known issue with nest and they still recommend installation without the common.

I tried and it still short cycled. I also disconnected theNest temperature sensor I had in the nursery thinking maybe it was confusing the system and that also didn’t help.

I had this installed. Do I still need to have the common wire installed? Is that a DIY project or should a professional do that?
Edit: there’s a blue wire in the wall. Is it safe to assume that’s the common? Should I uninstall the adapter?

Don’t install a Nest, experienced HVAC techs hate them because of potential costly issues they can cause to a homeowner’s HVAC. Check the responses of HVAC tech to Nest thermostats in this thread. LINK. They like Ecobee’s and Honeywells..
Sounds like you might need a good tech to sort this out. Wish I had a good diagnostician HVAC tech I could recommend but I’m trying to find one myself.

I’ll be honest I am not familiar with how that work. It is my understanding, unless it has an external power source (a battery) it is “stealing” the power to keep the nest screen powered on.
You may even be lucky and have the common wire run in the wall just not hooked up.

If all common wires are blue, I found it!

Likely so. See what color wire ties into the board to make sure. You may just need to hook it up.

Yeah…. I just climbed out of my attic and of course the blue wire isn’t hooked up there.

then its low on freon, you need to get it serviced but at least its still early yet, so you shouldnt have trouble getting someone out there.
even if its just a wiring issue you need someone who knows what they are doing to wire it and its a good time for the spring cleaning and checkup any way

He mentioned an old nest and a new nest, so I was confirming his issue was happening with the non-nest thermostat.....

I had a maintenance man check the freon already and he said it was fine.
Do you have anyone in Baton Rouge you can recommend to double check the freon and that knows what they are doing to check the wires?
