AC is two units OP the inside and outside unit (usually anyway as in some rare condos and other non normal homes have other options). Both about half the cost for each half. What size unit do you have? You can absolutely just replace an entire half a unit for 40-50% the price of a new unit. As in, if it’s $5500 you should be able to get an entirely new system for $11,000. Which would be the cost of a 5 ton replacement.

ETA: that quote is very VERY high OP. I don’t know your unit or size but for most homeowners I’d expect that job for $1500-3000 generally. You can replace the entire inside unit for $2500-5000 depending on size so it doesn’t make any sense to replace just the coil at some point.

Just curious, was this in Louisiana and what size unit?

I just had my condenser replaced (4 ton condenser plus cleaning of evaporator coils and blower) in Mandeville area.

Got 3 quotes at $7,057, $5,667, and $5,213.

have two units, both 6 years old. I replaced a coil on one last year. I have been out of a/c on a second unit for going on two weeks waiting on a valve. After failed attempts with the wrong part, the tech showed up today with the correct part. Turns out the coil was a different coil with a different serial number....looking like that coil had been replaced prior to me purchasing the house. It is amazing how much bull crap I have had with these two relatively new units. And the coil was not under warranty because the installer never registered it. I dont know enough to know if I am getting the run around or not.

Ok. After weeks of crap they have found a leak in the back of my coil. So I will know later today the replacement cost. This is the 5th or 6th time out to finally discover the leak. Lost 4 lbs in about 8 days.

The bigger the leak, the easier it is to find - loss of 4 lbs of refrigerant in 8 days is a big leak. You never did state the age of your unit or refrigerant type - R-22 or R-410A - but evaporator coils are notorious for developing leaks after 5 or 6 years of age.

If the coil is less than 10 years old and you are the original purchaser of the unit, and the system was registered with the manufacturer after the install, the evaporator coil should be covered under warranty but not labor or refrigerant. The cost of refrigerant nowadays is crazy high, particularly R-22, and labor is never cheap.

R410. And it is not registered. So no warranty. I am second owner of 7 year old home Just got quote and it is 2900. They looked supposedly added tge dye and couldn’t find it the next day after they came out either.

Were here 2 hours yesterday and found it.

They can’t see the backside of a installed evaporator without disassembling some stuff and often having to use a camera they have to fish through the furnace. So I can see where they might have had trouble locating the leak, even using dye.

It’s also impossible clean the backside of a evap coil without removing it & that’s why it’s important change air filters on a regular basis.

I recall several posters over the past year saying they had to pay $3K for a evap coil replacement, so that seems in line. Hopefully the replacement evap coil is all 100% aluminum (you should ask) - supposedly they don’t have the leakage issues that copper/aluminum evap coils have. I know it sucks, but having to replace copper/aluminum evap coils at 5 to 7 years is very common. Good luck!

It is 100% aluminum.

And he indicated it was in backside. I am AC illiterate but he said something about a cover or plate or something back there. All I heard was my inner voice bitching about it!

Had the other done about 14 months ago and I had thought it was 2200 but was 2650.

Just wanted to add to the quotes in this thread. 3 ton trane unit and coil replaced with new coils and 3 ton trane xr14 unit. Quote was $5350 and getting replaced next week. Seems like a pretty reasonable price for my area (central ms)
