Okay, making progress.

Took it apart again, found the main jet in the middle. Unscrewed that. Reassembled.

It starts and runs extremely rough for maybe a minute then dies

you should have more than 1 jet. if you would post the make/model of generator or what engine the generator has. I could post a carb diagram showing all the jets.

That’s a main one but there are probably one or two more. Are you using carb cleaner to remove the varnish in addition to the brushes?

Wen 9000e.

Found the idler jet and cleaned that. Been through 3/4 can of cleaner.

It started and i let it run for about 10 min. Shut it down to put the air filter and cover on. Won’t start. Took that stuff back off sprayed cleaner. No go. Back to where i started

You’re getting close - keep at it. Was it running good/smooth during those 10 minutes?

As an aside I have 2 Wen generators, 3500 & 2200, each must be 20 years old now. Both start on the first pull, checked both out earlier this AM, but over the years I’ve had to do what your are doing now. But I keep a new spare carb for each for these instances. So order one now, between getting your current one fixed & running.

Baffling. Let it sit for a few min. Started right up. Been going for 20 min fully assembled. I didn’t change anything.

Appreciate the help. This one has electric start. I’m getting too old to pull start these things.

It has 2-3 gallons of gas. I’m going to let it go for a while.

Your engine is probably a Chinese Honda clone of the GX390. The most likely problem is part # 21 the main nozzle underneath the main jet part # 38.

Not sure if the main nozzle screws in the carb body or it just slides in and the main jet holds it in place. If it slides in pull it out with a pick or bent paper clip. Clean all the holes in the nozzle. Both ends and the holes on the sides.

The nozzle will look similar to this pic of a honda main jet and nozzle

Yeah pretty sure that part came out when pulled the main jet out. I cleaned the center but, didn’t see the side holes. I’m going to let it run for an hour. I’m hoping it’s good for this storm.

Sometimes playing with the choke in different positions helps with an cold initial start. I also recently learned with my Firman Trifuel, which is electric start, that when pressing the electric start switch (when running on NG), I need to immediately release it for the generator to start right up. If hold the switch it will turn over but not start. Go figure.

I would suggest you consider adding some Seafoam to your gasoline - that solvent does a good job of cleaning the carb varnish when running.

Yeah, i have one that uses propane or gasoline. I figured out the same thing.

Seafoam ? At auto parts store?

the side holes are usually the ones that have some crap build up on them restricting the flow of gas and air

Many carb bowls have two screws, one that holds the bowl and one a little off to one side to drain out fuel. I just test fired my generator this afternoon, haven't used it in 2 years but it fired up on the first pull. I drain all the fuel then remove the carb bowl drain screw and send a shot of WD40 into it to soak the float and drive out any gas residue. I fog the inside of the drained fuel tank and zap some in the fuel petcock too. My CPE generator is probably 15 years old and it is spotless inside the fuel system and runs without problems.

Get the biggest can of sea foam u can find and pour it in there. The more sea foam the better the cleaning. You can’t put too much trust me. And then fill the rest of the tank with good fresh gas. I would also get the blue staybil and put two once of that in the tank incase u don’t run all the gas out.

I had one of those. Used through 4 storms. It always started when needed. It has to be stored correctly unless you take it out occasionally to test run it, which I never did.

After every use I always ran all the gas out then added fresh gas with Sta-Bil. Ran it until it died, would no longer start and was completely out of gas. Changed the oil, spark plug and checked/cleaned air filter.

Anyway worked for me.

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions. Generator ran for an hour. Shut it down for 15 min and it started right up. Delivered it to it’s intended home. Started on the first try.

I can sleep a little better knowing they won’t be completely without power.

I second the can of sea foam. It works wonders for small engines.

I like changing the oil every 2-3 days or 50 hours
