That looks fantastic! And that’s a beautiful piece of property you got there.

Thanks Both the property and the pup are a work in progress.

I’ve read that the vine borer resistant tromboncino squash does very well on a trellis. And butternut. I’m sure most smaller squash varieties would do well. I’m not sure about watermelons. I’ve never tried it.

I may order some trombocino seeds. When we’re talking borer resistance, is that really legit? I don’t have it in me to fight them on more than 4 plants .

Tromboncino and butternut have solid stems that make them much less susceptible to vine borer attacks. They’ll still get attacked but most of the damage is superficial. That being said, I did lose a butternut plant to the borers. But the plant was still very immature and small. They basically just ate through the entire vines. I probably should’ve covered it until it was big enough to have a chance.

Good looking spread sir.

I have a Kioti that is a twin of your unit. Your trellis looks like it would be perfect for pole beans.

Thanks man. Mine is an L3902. Perfect size for my piece.

Do yall start pole beans inside? Or direct sow? I’ve never grown them before.

Went to HD this morning for a couple things. They have full compliment of garden plants. Isn't it kinda early(CENLA)? I bought some tomatoes for places I think I can cover. Going to try salad stuff again now that we have an outdoor cat. She may be a decent rabbit deterrent.

Worth it to let it grow out or get rid of it? Kinda getting a mixed feeling after reading about them online.

I know people that plant them on purpose. I personally would not have one. Different strokes.

I usually direct sow 2x as many as I want in a row and thin the seedlings as they come up. My wife hates green beans but I converted her on pole beans. The key is to pick them when young and tender.
I usually plant Kentucky Blue and they make a ton. I have to pick beans everyday at peak production.

Me either. I like them but prefer them in the woods, not in my yard.

cucumbers. Looking for other ideas though. We aren’t huge on beans but I may grow some anyway. Do yall start them inside or just plant them in the garden?

I direct sow. When cucumbers are done I transition to purple hulls because they can take the heat of summer

Any particular reasons? Are they messy with leaves? Just don't look good?

Not really. There's just a ton of them in our woods & I've never felt the need to have one as a part of our landscaping. Same with wild hydrangeas for me.

I’m about to put down some 13-13-13 in my raised beds. A while back I added sulphur after getting my soil test results back (see below)

Would anyone recommend topping the garden off with some other media at this time as well?

Did you ever get recommendations from LSU Ag Center? If not, I would reach out to them.

A little bit of epsom salt in your planting holes should help remedy your magnesium deficiency. Maybe side dress every month or so after planting.

I had read that the vine borer has only one life cycle per year, so it works well to do a fall crop. So I planted butternuts in July: didn't have any borer issues, but they were really slow to get going in the heat. Once it finally cooled off in October, the fruits never really got very big.

Mine went crazy on a trellis last year. I had some Desi, Scallop, and Acorn squash plants near it that got killed by borers. They didn't touch the Tromboncino or Butternut plants.

I’m sure bluemoons will be happy with that report. How do they taste?

They were great. I picked some young and treated like zucchini. Others I let mature and have roasted a few of those. One of them is still sitting on my counter so they hold up pretty well.
