Need some help with these ghost peppers. They just don’t look healthy. I think the soil is too wet. Any suggestions?

Also. Checked bees the other day. Have 20 colonies coming out of winter. Zero losses. Thought smaller colonies would die in those single digits, but even a Nucleus colony made it. 1 colony with a swarm cell already. Anxious for some good weather.

Anyone know of a good place to check to find old/scrap lattice for a garden? fricking Lowes trying to charge $36 for a single 4x8 pine lattice.

For the same price you can get cattle panels twice as long and will last for years and years.

Cattle Panel

We even used it as an archway in the garden for climbers.

That is one hell of a queen cell

Would you attempt a split (if wanting to split this spring) this early in the spring or wait for the flow to start? I guess biggest concern would be lack of drones.

I checked my single hive this past weekend. Doing good with 3-4 frames of various stages of brood and probably 8 frames of honey still. I was probably too aggressive in feeding this winter. I'd like to come out of the flow with 3 hives total though so at least I'll have plenty of resources to split with.

That colony has a bad reputation for having swarmy genetics. I’m going to replace that queen once I start raising queen cells. I do have capped drone brood but I don’t like to graft till I see drones walking on comb. I found the mother queen still laying in the bottom box so I put the queen cell in the top box with plenty of bees, brood and food, then I put a double screen board between them.

Really just playing around to see if I get a mated queen back this early. If not, I’ll just remove the board and recombine the hive. All sorts of options if she comes back mated.

Also, never such a thing as feeding too aggressively in fall/winter. March isn’t even here. Colonies are brooding up. They can starve before you know it by March if they don’t have enough weight and a larger population. Sounds like yours are looking good. I’m sure you can get a couple splits if all goes well.

Are you referring to the tips of the leaves?

The whole plant over all. Maybe too much sun. They’ve been by the window a couple weeks. I did put outside for a short time as well.

That’s my guess. Not properly hardened off. Been there, done that.

Your bees are looking great! I really need to open mine up and check in on them. Between work and the weather not cooperating it’s been far too long. The box is still heavy, so I know they have food. And I’ve been monitoring entrance activity as often as I can. They’ve been bringing in pollen from somewhere over the last few weeks. And I always put my ear up to the box and listen. Sounds like a healthy population.

I plan on putting one of these on my wooden fence to grow beans/cucumbers on.

2" x 4" wire mesh in a roll. Old mattress, set on fire, instant trellis.

Full frame of brood and a queen cell Feb. 1

Now I'm worried I need to trudge through the field to check mine.

Wouldn’t hurt to peak. Like I said earlier this colony just likes to swarm. All my colonies had 2-4 frames with brood. The maples are blooming a month ahead of what they did the last few years, so it’s got them wanting to jump in size.

Yeah I'll peak this weekend. Maples and ash in bloom here too. Hopefully after 4 days of rain and highs around 40 they decided not to get too ambitious (and hopefully they're not too pissy).

My garage has been 55 all week. My seedlings are a little leggy because I think I got the cheap-arse lights.

Is that what the pale yellow pollen I see being brought in is?

Maple pollen is a grayish brown. Yellow could be Alder. I’m not very good at identifying what pollen I’m seeing.

Made a trip to the garden center and bought a few strawberry plants to fill in the gaps in my strawberry box. All full, and have a few small berries growing.

I’m glad my kids like carrots. But I have a feeling we’ll be giving a lot away.

I’ve got to get off my arse and plant some carrots this fall. That was a favorite of my kids.

I haven’t been able to have much success with growing carrots. Not sure why. I had a raised bed full of seedlings but they didn’t grow much, then most disappeared.
