I’d be easy with miracle grow on seedlings. Don’t overdo it. You’ll burn them.

What’s the recommended amount of MiracleGro for a gallon of water to use on seedlings?
For seedlings I use 1/4 of the recommended dilution once every other week.

I used Fox Farms 'Grow Big' this year to the same effect. Watching the effect of the fertilizer was pretty neat for me. The day after I fertilized the pepper plants exploded.

What’s the opinion on using plastic to limit weeds? I have a vacant lot that I’ve killed off the weeds. Thinking of putting down some plastic and throwing a few plants in the ground. I don’t feel like weeding.

I’ve done it before in between rows and it worked great to prevent weeds from popping up. The only problem is you’ll need to either poke holes to make sure excess water can drain through, or make sure your garden is sloped adequately in order to not have stagnant water. Also you’ll want to leave enough room around the plants to make sure some water can get down into the soil.

Buy the weed fabric which let’s water though, not sheet plastic.

You could try diatomaceous earth to kill them. Also called Azimote I think. Watch some YouTube videos and see what you think.

I did this once, and mulched over it.
I still got weeds. They were growing hydroponically in the mulch and the roots found their way horizontally into seams in the fabric. Little bitches. Easy to pull out though.
One thing that has been working for me so far this year is I put down my lawn pre-emergent throughout the garden (not growing anything from seed) and not a weed yet.

Not a bad idea, I bought the 36” plastic row cover that lets water through, been putting it out at my camp, need to finish laying out, burn some holes in it, then plant in maybe 1-2 weeks.
Trying to get to my raised beds at home today.

A few pics from the garden today.
The tomatoes are settling in and starting to get some size. A few flower clusters popping up already. These are the Romas.
Peppers are slowly coming along. They need some warmer nights.
Cantaloupe has sprouted.
Watermelon has sprouted.
Sunflowers are coming up.
Some financial advice for everyone. Buy Corona stock. The limes are coming in.
Finished up some yard work and was watching the LSU baseball game from a shady spot in the garden.
And I had a visitor. Not sure what she was after.

Everything in your garden looks great!
What variety or varieties of watermelon did you plant? I'm just curious. :) I know these days there are quite a few newer ones as well as old standbys to choose from.

Thanks.
I went with Crimson Sweet. It’s been a long time since I’ve grown watermelon. I hope I get a few nice ones.

Crimson Sweet is an excellent choice!

Everything is doing fine for me. Agreed that the peppers need some warmer nights. They’re a bit slow but some are flowering. My cherry tomato plants have clusters and the Brad’s atomic grape plant that’s almost died on me like 5 times seems to be doing pretty good now. If it winds up producing, I may have to save some seeds from that plant ha.
I direct seeded some sweet success cucumbers earlier this week and they’ve sprouted already.

I’m starting to get some cucumber and beans popping up, too. I had some Poinsett 76 seeds leftover from a couple of years ago, and some Dasher II from last year. All of the Dashers sprouted, 1 of the P76 sprouted. May be time to throw those seeds out and get some fresh seeds.

What’s the width & thickness of the boards for your raised beds? If you grew carrots in those, did you dig down into the existing soil before adding in the garden soil (or whatever you’re using)?
TIA

I finally got around to putting some tomatoes and peppers in the garden. Only about half were ready for the move since I got a late start seeding. I also got around to planting a fig tree I had bought a while back. I decided to plant in the chicken coop where I used to throw all the bedding because its all composted down now and pretty rich, plus the chickens need some more shade in the after noon.
Naturally after I had covered up around the tree, the chickens wanted to scratch all around it so I let them free roam the backyard to distract them for a while. I got caught up doing other things and went inside for a while to help the wife with the kids. Those damn chickens got into the garden and tore it all up. A couple of tomatoes will survive and maybe half the peppers. The garlic should be fine.
I'm about to turn some of them into chicken nuggets.

2 x 12's, and it’s 4’ x 10’ beds. I didn't dig down. Just put a couple of layers of cardboard and threw some bed builder on top. I haven't grown carrots in these yet, since I just built them a couple of months ago. But I did have a raised bed a couple of years ago made the same way with 2 x 10's that I grew carrots in and they did fantastic. I'll have to go see if I can find the picture from that harvest.

anyone grow patty pan squash?
First attempt this year. From what I've found online they seem fairly easy to grow.

The white ones have been around for decades. I've grown both the white and green many times, and I agree they're very easy to grow and are very prolific.
