$$$$ Artificial Grass Quote (DFW)

Closed on a new home built on a 40' lot in the DFW area. As part of HOA dues, the front lawn is cut by a crew so I started looking into artificial grass for the backyard. With the covered patio and concrete extension, I am left with a 23'x16' space and a side strip that is 55'x5'.
I expected the quote to range between $2,500 - $3,500. I went through The Home Depot and received a quote today for $5,500 low-end and $8,000 high-end.
IMO this is ridiculous and I can't justify spending that. Does anyone have artificial grass and if so, does this seem this high or did I underestimate how expensive artificial grass is?

I don't have it, but have a neighbor who has it in the backyard and another who was quoted recently for a small area. I would say your underestimating. It's much more expensive than you would think.
The other thing is that artificial turf isn't necessarily maintenance free and may require replacing in several.years depending on the traffic and use.

I think you are underestimating. There will have to be removal of the existing grass and surface prep (sand / level / pack).
Also, artificial turf gets very hot in the summer. Like you won't walk on it barefoot in summer time.

might as well put a small pool in and call it a day.

Artificial grass is more than what you see on the surface, it requires sub-base prep and compacted gravel.

$10/sf is a good starting point.
It's close to the same process as pavers.
You can get systems that create a cool zone too.

Check out Ideal Turf in Ft Worth. I paid about $6/sf about a year ago.
It's hot as shite, but it's pretty. No mowing but it does need to be vacuumed or blown off from time to time depending on the trees you have around you.
Make sure the drainage is right.

I have it in strips around my pool and it was more expensive installed than the travertine we used for the pool deck.
