Thread buoyancy on Reddit is affected by numerous factors, including the age of the thread, total comments, and total upvotes. They also have a system in place such that automatic downvotes are applied to keep particularly popular threads in check.
The reason it works on Reddit is primarily due to the outstanding algorithms they have in place that govern this system.

speaking of the tier status on here, i believe it would make this site more tolerable if sign up date was removed. veteran posters on here seem to attack and belittle the posts of any recent sign up or "noob" to the point of absurdity. it is the worst on the ot if you have recently enrolled in tigerdroppings U the shite storm from veteran posters with little man syndrome is annoying

I would actually remove post counts instead. It really doesn't serve much purpose, other than to discriminate against users with an exceptionally low count, or mock other users with an exceptionally high count.
Not only would it essentially remove the entire concept of "e-cred" on this site, but it would disincentivize trolling and excessive posting. Believe it or not, but post count actually matters to some people, and many of them have no problem polluting the board with fatuous posts to reach a certain number.
Parenthetically, on the subject of trolls, I wonder if the admins realize that by maintaining such an obstinate attitude towards name change requests, they're actually incentivizing the act of trolling. Say a poster wants his name changed, but never gets a response, or is even told "no". What is he likely to do? Create another use name. And when users have 2-3 user names, they're free to assume another identity on the board, and can post and troll without fear of their "main" account being banned.

This is actually a really good point.
ETA: BUT, taking away all e-cred will also do the same thing; keep people unattached to their main accounts and give them no reason to not make more accounts.

I don't think you realize what you're asking for. I was on a site that had that, and it led to a lot of pandering and sandy vagina's. "Why did someone give me the thumbs down?" It's better to tell someone why they're terrible than to just give them a thumbs down, and they'll know what to work on.

You just got a thumbs down and negative karma.

It's my civic duty to prevent shitty posters from taking over.

You make a very valid point here.
However, with the "e-cred" part, isn't tying a user name to some sort of identity, to something at least, part of the board mystique? To be able to be someone, to have an identity. If there is no point to having some sort of credibility, what's the point of having usernames at all? Go ahead and make it fully anonymous and let ideas stand or fall on their own merit and not on the reputation of their author.
This site is already rife with the "cool kids" cliques. It's high school drama at best. I am in favor of anything that shakes the system up and makes ideas stand on their own.

why not just give the user the option? View by: Standard or Karma?
