it's been around for awhile, but it only seems to appear in certain threads

I thought it had to do with the like feature but that post doesn't have any. Definitely an admin thing.

Thanks, that's a good enough answer for me. This was the first time I saw it and had no idea what it was.
I checked that as well as the number of posts he had. Now I have something other than post totals to shoot for.

It's a way for admins to promote a post that might otherwise get buried or missed. This was a perfect case for that.

I actually agree. It will be two years for me in May and I've only posted a little over 1,200 times. I see some pass that number in a week. And by no means have everyone of my posts been
worthy but I do put thought into most of them.
