Is there a difference between Flaming and Trolling?

I see in the guidelines it says:
Is this another name for trolling, or is trolling something else?
quote:
2. DO NOT “flame the board.” “Flaming” is the deliberate act of creating a post in order to incite members of the board and invoke a negative response.

Flaming is a bit more aggressive and direct. Trolling takes a bit more skill and patience.

Trolling is more hedonistic, in that the user seeks to deceive others to possibly evoke a response out of them, typically for their own enjoyment.
Flaming is more explicit, in that you are clearly and directly calling out someone else, and attack them due to your own frustration.
To analogize this for better clarification, "trolling" would be similar to making a prank phone call, while "flaming" would be more akin to punching someone in the face.

if he don't know the difference between flaming and trolling, he's not gonna know what hedonistic means

50% of the rant and 80% of the OT would be banned if it were.
Trolling is also a good excuse for people who are legitimately dumb, but want people to think they are just messing with others.

flaming = cathartic release from daily hassles and personal demons
trolling = pathetic attempt to get enjoyment out of a miserable existence

And I think I am a troll a good bit of the time I'm on the OT. But I don't flame.

I thinks trolls are mythological. They don't exist. Stuff of legend.

quote:Trolling is being intentionally provocative for no purpose other than incite. I would see flaming more as trolling with an element of nastiness added to it. That's just my defintion.

i have always thought of it as this:
trolling is inciting an entire board with intellectually dishonest material, knowing full well what you are doing.
flaming is the same act, but directed at a specific person or groups of persons on the board.

I might as well just jump off the Chase building now if Chicken ever full on bans trolling.
