Any of you baws try this?

quote:

Has a personal trainer ever told you to fill up before a workout?

A study cited in the Science Daily article, Routine periodic fasting is good for your health, and your heart highlights the fact that after a 24 hour fast, males HGH production was up 2000% and females 1,300%. You also will receive a testosterone boost while working out in a fasted state. Testosterone increases libido, muscle mass, and energy levels in men and women. Working out in a fasted state allows HGH and testosterone to work in tandem providing you the best environment for burning fat and building muscle.

Can any of you Workout Warriors tell me why I shouldnt be doing this?

I workout in a fasted state. My first calories of the day are usually post-workout throughout the week. I do this more so because of schedule and I like I.F. rather than based on any studies.

I never train totally fasted (Creatine and BCAA's) but the high is there.

It's the same thing as a hungry Tiger during his hunt. Why fill up before? It's got to be the same logic.

I do this for morning cardio sessions but substitute caffeine instead of creatine.

(Then creatine in the post workout)

I can’t workout on an empty stomach, but that’s just me.

This does not translate one bit to the real world FYI.

If you like working out fasted, do so but it is not optimal. But you are not going to make some huge difference in gains by being fed either so go with what you prefer.

I workout in a fasted state probably 90% of the time. 12 hours minimum, but typically around 16 hours into a fast.

It’s important to hydrate throughout the day if you’re planning to workout fasted. BCAAs, creatine, coffee, tea and water.

For me personally, I prefer it over eating beforehand. Feels cleaner if that makes sense. Haven’t noticed anything different really as far as performance is concerned. If anything, there’s a noticeable increase in focus and mental clarity when lifting fasted. Your meal afterwards is also especially delicious because you’ve been without food all day.

I guess this makes sense you would see body builders in mass doing this. ?

I think of three different things when I hear "working out while fasting."

There's working out prior to your first real meal on a IF routine, but after having less than 200 calories

There's working out prior to any calories at all for the day on a IF routine

And there's working out while in a 24 hour or longer fast.

I prefer the first scenario. Feel like my workouts are more productive.

IF is not optimal for mass building, correct.

The sweet spot.

Subject A is trying to bulk on 4500 calories.

Subject B is trying to cut on 1800 calories.

Lets say you average 2 big meals a day, that's perfect for a cut. If you want to bulk you are trying to squeeze almost 2.5 more calories in the same "window".

It doesn't improve fat loss over time. That said, if it feels good or works better for your adherance and scheduling then do it.

Working out in a fasted state, with 2 big meals a day at 1800 calories is the sweet spot for cutting?

No...I was giving you an example.

I eat 2 big meals a day. Some people eat 6 small meals. Some people eat 1 giant meal and in the long run they'll all achieve the same goal with consistency.

As I recall there was a university study that lsu777 posted a while back where they showed that an IF routine vs. non-IF routine did not impact muscle gain during a bulk. But an IF routine while bulking did impact the amount of fat gained during the bulk.

Fasted AM cardio is a bodybuilding staple.

Weightlifting sessions not as much

Edit: not saying that fasted cardio is optimal but responding to your question about what bodybuilders in mass are doing.

Correct. Fasting is inherently catabolic. That's why some bodybuilders will set an alarm for the middle of the night to wake up and get in a protein feeding then - to help with anabolism and increased protein synthesis.

I worked out fasted for awhile (crossfit) and had major issues with my cortisol spiking and it gave me retinopathy in my right eye.
