Looking at picking up some used plates tomorrow. 255lb CAP iron plate set, stand for them, and an additional 100 pounds in 10s for $160.

What are the kind of things I need to check then out for when looking before I pay? Just excessive rust?

Do you have a bathroom scale? Bring it and weigh for accuracy.

Also bring a tape measure for dimensions. Check the size of the hole (that's what she said) vs your barbell and the plate diameter vs olympic.

First section has standards for 45 LB plate and hole

Then, just any imperfections or chunks missing or any glaring issues.

Thanks. Is CAP at least a relatively reputable brand for iron plates, as far as the budget brands go?

Yeah. They're at least not one that sets off an automatic red flag.

Edit: hopfully this is what they are offering.

Not those. I can't get a pic uploaded, but they have handle cutouts and the edges are rounded.

Thanks for that link and the info / feesback.

It's what I have. The plates are fine. The bar is crappy but good enough for my purposes.

Please don’t bring a scale, you’ll look like an idiot. If I was selling weights that were stamped and you brought a scale over, I would run you out of my house on principle. Pure stupidity.

How would you know scale is calibrated correctly?

He can do what he wants to, but a stamped # doesn't mean plates are actually that weight.

Variance can be up to 10%. If it was me, I'd want to know if the 2 45 pound plates I'm buying are actually 42 and 48 pounds.

If I was OP, I wouldn't care if the weights are slightly over or under their listed weight. I would care that they roughly match each other.

If they don't, you'll load the same plates and one side of the bar weighs 8 pounds more than the other side does. The fact they're used only means the wear and tear can make them vary further from the original weights.

The set I bought were all as close to the stated weight as I could tell with a bathroom scale.

A couple years ago I ran into a deal on Olympic plates I couldn't pass up. Picked up over 500 lbs. of plates from 45, 35, 25 and 10 lb. for $200.

There was some light surface rust so I hit them with a wire wheel and brushed on some of that Rustoleum Hammer Tone paint and they look great still.

That's good. Like I said, you just don't want differences between plates listed the same.

If you have one heavier 45 and one heavier 25, if you load them on the same side, you can create a major difference in weight with one side of the bar.

It doesn't really matter if they're a little light or heavy if the sides are the same unless you're looking to compete in powerlifting and need to calculate an opener.

I picked them up today. I had a scale and just casually weighed each one of them as I loaded them into the Acadia. I'm not sure the seller even noticed. I didnt bother weighing the 10s, 5s, or 2.5s, but the 45s, 35s, and 25s were all within 1 pound of the stamped weight. I think that's going to be good enough for me. It's my first set and purely for personal use.

$160:
2 45s
2 35s
2 25s
10 10s
4 5s
2 2.5s
Plate tree that holds all of them

I thought it was a good deal. I measured the 45s and they were both standard 17"~. All of them has some minor Knicks, but were all in very good condition otherwise. I looked at his gym and he's got an oly bar in good shape and clamps I'm going to buy next week for 90.

I think it was a decent deal. If photobucket every starts to work I'll post a picture of the set. It's a ton of weights.
