Going to be 39 soon and want to go ahead and get an extensive checkup.

What blood work/ scans / etc should I put on the list?

Overall in great health. Diet is mostly meat, fruit and rice. 15% body fat. Running a 7 minute mile.

Had my testosterone checked and I am at 600. Colesterol is good.

Go to to your doctor and ask.

I'm 52 now and started doing an annual physical/wellness exam with my primary care physician at age 40. They send me to the lab after my visit for all the necessary blood work. Doctor gives his notes and thoughts on each test. And it's part of my insurance each year with no out of pocket expense. Probably a good route for you.

Schedule an annual physical. Your doctor should talk to you and ask about any concerns. He’ll run his normal tests and then maybe some extra depending on what is going on with you or how your first results come back.

Add:

C Reactive Protein

Cortisol

Insulin level

Maybe homocysteine

My prevention NP orders these and a bunch of other stuff. She’s really helped my cardiac status.

Speaking of cardiac stays: I would ask for a calcium ct score, it can give a great idea if you may have future problems brewing. They are totally non evasive and mine cost $50 out of pocket. I’d schedule these on a 5 year rotation.

I did one of these and was 0 but cardiologist didn’t seem impressed and said even a 0 is irrelevant. I was excited about it also

He’s not wrong. A score of zero doesn’t give a get at of jail card for life, but a zero score is certainly correlated with a very positive outcome over, let’s say, the next ten years; at least concerning coronary events. Another way to say it: a 40yo with a zero score would be considered to be “normal” with a very low risk associated with adverse cardiac events over the the next ten years. In the end, it’s a predictive tool that I would consider when hitting the big 4-0.

OP- we are very similar. I turned 40 last year and i eat well, workout 6x a week and have my whole life. 5''1 165 and lean.

My dad had quadruple bypass at 39 and his brother did at 45. Both are still alive in their 70s but i told myself I'm getting all cardiac tests at 40 and glad i did.

My calcium score was a 1200!!! Doctor immediately did all tests and did a heart cath. He looked at the arteries and thankfully all my plaque is evenly spread along the walls of my arteries and i didnt have a spot more than 10% blocked.

Im now on baby aspirin and a statin.

Let me know if you have any questions but that was a huge wake up for me. My doc said its mostly due with the genetic cards you're dealt and said he's done thousands of stints,19 year college athletes and 80 year distance runners.

Thats why you occasionally hear of the runner who drops dead or the famous person at 45 or 50 dying of a heart attack. They think they are healthy but have the silent killer of an artery being blocked

Crazy. Stay on top of your heart.
