Looking at these in preparation for hunting season. Any recommendations and do's/don'ts? Thinking a 40 lb one would probably best replicate my hunting load.

if you want to simulate your hunting pack, why not just walk around with you hunting pack?
I have the 5.11 plate carrier and it works great, but there are certainly cheaper options
although for what you want, a rucksack would probably be best, no?

Yes
Weighted vests distribute weight on the front and back, it's going to be nothing like carrying a pack. Get a ruck sack, or if you are trying to be cheap use your hunting pack and make some sandbags.

Last year, I weighted my hunting pack and walked around with it. It's just not ideal. Most of my weight is from a gun and treestand and not the backpack. So a ruck sack? Any particular one?

Need to ditch the climber and join us in the saddle hunting world

I hunted a couple of times from the ground last year with a tree seat. I see me doing more of that going forward. WAY lighter.
