My 11 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. She is currently in the honeymoon phase where her body is still producing some insulin. I wanted to come to my TD baws, since I have seen some pretty good health tips on this board.

I know there isn't a cure now, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to extend the honeymoon period before her T-Cells completely die off. Also, does anyone know of any clinical studies going on for extending the honeymoon period?

Fasting and keto but that's gonna be hard for a 11 year old.

I am a type 1 for 20 years, I would be glad to answer any questions you have. I am a nurse and diabetes educator as well. I am hesitant to post my email... Want to post your and I'll reply when I've seen it and you can take it down.

On a side note, having worked with kids who have diabetes through the school system the best thing you can do is to teach them how to count their carbs. I can’t tell you how many kids your kids age or older don’t know how to.

Luckily, she already has a great diet and knows how to count her carbs...just wondering if anyone knows if there is any research out there to extend the honeymoon phase?

Verapimil Study

My friend was in this study, pretty sure she got placebo because her disease progressed...

Not sure about any research related to honeymoon phase but it is clear as a type 1 that she will be on insulin therapy soon. Good news is that now that pumps exist the need for constant injections goes away and with the advancement of continuous glucose monitoring systems the need for finger pricking has been greatly reduced. Not trying to suggest that it still doesn't suck but it is a much more manageable disease, especially for kids, than it once was.
