If I had to go to a gym I would never pick up a weight. Just more driving, traffic, hassle and time away from the family. With a rack, a bar, and some plates in my garage I can lift four times a week with no hassle while spending time with my kids and modeling good habits.
Same. I'm pretty OCD about getting it in at the house. I don't want to have to drive to a gym at all and it would take longer.

I built my house with a room designated for my "gym". My only regret...should've made it bigger!
Background: I've labeled myself (in the past) a "gym whore" because at one point in time, I had a membership to 3 gyms. One was due to tuition deduction (mandatory). Anyway, I loved going to the gym.
BUT, I love my home gym more. I have a commercial-style bike, bowflex (which is the hubby's), & a small weight-set for the "classes" I take via a Les Mills subscription, which are the exact same classes taught at the gym.
Either route, it doesn't matter as much as your discipline to use it. Both can be a waste if you don't use it. Both can be a benefit if you do. It's preference.

I don’t have kids yet, so gym membership for me. But I can see how having a home gym would be easier with kids.
I tried the home gym with adjustable bench and dumbbells for a little while when I lived nowhere close to a gym, and like another poster said, I was always telling myself “I’ll get to it in a few minutes” and that would never come because there was always some other house chore I could be doing. And if I did, there was always some distraction. Dogs start barking at something, wife comes to tell me something & start a conversation, etc.
Going to the gym forces me to focus on my workout because I took the time to get ready and drive there. It’s become more of a sanctuary for my “me time”. It also forces you to get over being around other people (if you have some sort of social anxiety). And of course an abundance of equipment vs home gym. Also helps my gym is never super crowded.
If/when I have kids and if decide to go the home gym route, I would have to fully invest in the equipment and go all out. Bench, squat rack, dumbbell rack, cables, etc. I’m too used to having a variety of equipment.

Do you already regular workout and have been for a month or so consistently?
if yes, buy some home equipment.
if no, get a small gym membership and create the habit of working out regularly. This will help you figure out if you're gonna stick with it. And, it'll help you see what type of things you enjoy doing so you can buy equipment for home you'd actually use.

I have both. I honestly find it hard to motivate myself as well working out at home. It’s good for days when I just can’t get to the gym, but the quality of the workout is rarely the same. It’s mental, I know, but the gym environment positively affects my movitation, energy and time spent. It helps that the gym is less than a 5 minute drive, if I had to drive across town, it’s probably a different story.
