Torn Arm Muscle?

Last week while working in the yard I heard a pop and my arm hurt like hell. My muscle now just hangs. Is this a torn ligament or what? I have been resting it, but I can't do certain things.

Post a picture of your muscle hanging.

I’m an ortho. It’s tendons that hold muscle to bone, ligaments hold joints together. Go see a specialist Monday.

You need ice and elevation, minutes after this happened. Just resting it means it continues to swell, which is no bueno.
But listen to the ortho that posted, get an appointment, yesterday. The longer you leave it, the more your other muscles and other side of your body will try to compensate, which will create further issues in other places.

Getting an appointment up here is never quick. I will contact the orthopedic group that did my knee replacement tomorrow.
I am already overcompensating and using my right arm more which is bad due to arthritis in the shoulder.
Edit: I just checked the website of that orthopedic group and they have a walk-in clinic for injuries that occurred less than two weeks ago. I hurt my arm last Sunday. I will go tomorrow. It looks like I have a big muscle which I don't have when I bend my arm.

I keep rereading this and wondering how the OP thought this didn't warrant making a Dr's appt? I am a stubborn man but damn.

Happened to me back in January shoveling ice on the driveway.
Sounds like a ruptured biceps tendon (long head). If that's it, you can tell by your biceps muscle dropping a few inches toward your elbow and leaving a noticeable void where your biceps muscle was. They call it the popeye effect.
If you're not an old guy like me, then you really need to get that looked at and start the repair process.
Sidenote: That's when I started wolvering stack injections (into the shoulder) which has helped mine tremendously from a pain and usefulness perspective. Good luck with yours!

Sounds like a torn ligament. I just had surgery on my elbow to repair a torn ligament and slight bone fracture. Here is a thread I started about the topic. The OP has all the information I can offer regarding that topic.

Yesterday, almost 8 weeks post opp, I went to the driving range for the first time since my surgery, and was able to swing my clubs pretty well. I've also been lifting weights for a lil over two weeks now. Now, I'm not repping out 225 on the bench as a warm up set like I was before the injury, but I'm getting back my strength slowly but surely. Every week I notice a significant increase in what I'm able to comfortably lift.
So if your injury requires surgery and its a similar issue to mine (inner ligament in my right elbow; complete tear from the bone), this should give you a decent idea about recovery time.

This is what I was told happened. The Doctor recommended not having surgery. She said the other muscles will pick up the slack and the bulge will lessen some, but it will still be there. I am 75 so I didn't really want surgery. It does not hurt as bad as it did the first few days. I will start working out with some light weights to build my other muscles up. She also said the shoulder looked great with no arthritis which is good being I have a lot of arthritis already in my other shoulder.

Holy shite, way to bury the lede. But, congrats on still shoveling your driveway at that age.

Good call. I''m 73. Doc said unless you plan to pitch or play QB again, just let it heal on its own. Four months later I'm in the gym five days a week and still strengthening the biceps up without any real pain, even though it sits just a little lower than where it was originally. Shoulder work has helped tremendously for support of the rolled up tendon.
