In certain cities they have companies that have a dexa machine in the back of a truck and they go to different gyms around the area.
Going tomorrow to get an idea of where im at.

get you a backpack, put some weights in it and start walking

How much weight? Never thought of this
FYI, if you're seriously considering this and want to experiment easily (and cheaply), sometimes when prepping for more rigorous hikes we take a backpack that we already own and just carry varying amounts of water.
To me the easiest is the handled/spout container from the grocery store that looks like this:
When full at 2.5 gallons, it'll add a little over 20 pounds. If you use an actual pack (not a daypack) you may be able to get two in, which would probably put you around 50 pounds including the weight of the pack itself, a bladder for drinking, etc.
One advantage with this method is that if you ever find yourself struggling for any reason, you can always stop and empty the containers, freeing up the weight for the trip back.
Again, this isn't the fanciest solution, but if you're looking to try out the concept on a local trail and want something that's easy to scale, it's a great way to start out.

Congrats man. I've lost 30 lbs over the last several months. First 25 lbs was mostly dieting but plateau'd at that weight then started hitting the gym and have steadily been dropping a little every day. Got another 11 lbs to go before I'm in the "normal weight" category according to the BMI. I'm not too concerned about the BMI scale, but it would be nice to not be considered even overweight. Started in the Obese range by a small margin.
