My friend recently started swimming 4-5 miles a week. He asked me this question, but I didn’t have an answer for him, so figured I would ask TD.

Basically, since he started swimming, his appetite as well as the quantity/volume/smell of his farts have all increased. Is this related to his swimming? If so, why? If not, what kind of a doctor should he visit?

I will pass all responses onto my friend. Thank you (especially if you are a doctor or swimmer with similar experience).

Even though I burn more calories running, I’m always famished after I finish a swim. Seems pretty normal to have an increased appetite. Not sure about the farts tho, baw.

I am not a doctor, but will do several miles of swimming when training for a race. My guess is it is some amalgamation of three things: the nature of longer training sessions, the sustained core work that swimming with form requires, gulping air when he breathes. The other obvious source is to identify what he is eating.

He's burning more calories so he's got a bigger appetite. As far as the gas, he's probably gulping air when he's coming up for breath. Has he started drinking protein shakes as a post workout? Those can give you bad farts

When I did triathlon, I was always starving after swimming. Other training wears me out and overheats me, so my appetite stays suppressed for a while. I could eat whatever I wanted without concern for calories...and I did. Which leads to bad digestion in sure. Probably what he's dealing with.
