Does anyone know a grad student or upper level speech student that would possibly be interested in working with my 18 month old son? He is borderline so insurance won’t cover a true therapist appointment. Just trying to get him headed in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

I don't know anyone in BR, but they should offer it once they are in Pre-K.

And I wanted to say, you are a good parent taking the initiative to get it corrected. I still talk with a lisp because I stopped after 5th grade and had a really bad therapist. Getting it corrected will help them more than you ever know.

both of my boys went to/are going to Emerge. its costly and insurance doesn't cover much for us, but those people are miracle workers!

I’d try to help out but I don’t have my occupational therapy license yet

And yes we can help with some things in speech

I’d suggest early steps if possible.

If borderline I’d seek a 2nd opinion if possible

How many words is he saying? Is there a lisp or slur or not able to form words? Is more than one language being spoken because that can cause a delay

Call Abilities. Get them to test him, you may have to pay.

Abilities in Satsuma has a great therapist named Erin. She is part time now so that may limit your chances. But she did a great job with my son.

If it’s an oral motor issue

You may want to try using straws which will make him use his tongue and muscles of the mouth more

Please keep in mind children’s language explosion can occur bt 18-30 months so it’s okay to err on the side of caution but act patiently too.

It’s great that you’re showing initiative and are concerned, but if he’s babbling and articulate his wants and expressing himself by other means such as pointing and grabbing objects then this may not be a long term problem

My daughter just turned 2 and says a little more than 20 words but we’re also a bilingual household. She does understand English and some Spanish too

My quiet one is only mimicking 18 words at 2.5 y/o. My other one is doing full sentences at the same age (twins).

It intrigues me how children develop so differently during g the first 3 years

My daughter was ahead on every milestone except speech, was walking before 10 months running by 11 months
