She Ran the Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifying Time, But She Can’t Compete in Atlanta

Just curious as to the H/F Board's opinion on this is. It's a borderline OT Lounge question, but I figure I'd get more educated responses from folks here.
She much more than likely wouldn't have made the US team, but I think she ought to have been allowed to go to the Olympic trials, based on the qualifications. Why is a 2:45 in Houston more or less better than a 2:45 in , say, Los Angeles?

Erin Gregoire crossed the finish line of the Houston Marathon, looked at her watch, and smiled. In her debut at the distance, she ran 2:42:55—well under the qualifying time of 2:45:00 she needed for the Olympic Marathon Trials. In what has become a complex case, however, Gregoire was denied entry into the Trials, because the differential between her gun time (2:54:54) and chip time (her 2:42:55) was too large. And the day of the Houston Marathon (January 19) was the final day of qualifying, so it was her last shot at getting into the race. “Obviously it was an incredible experience to just get to run the marathon, but I knew in the back of my head that the [Olympic Trials qualifier] was what I wanted,” Gregoire told Runner’s World. “To get that, and then in some sense feel like it was taken away from me, it was heartbreaking.”
quote:
When determining who makes it into the Trials, USA Track & Field officials, who govern the sport, considered only gun times. They only looked at chip times or “net times” if those times were “extremely close” to the qualifying standards.
quote:
But Gregoire, 22, had nearly 12 minutes between her gun time and her chip time—not close enough for USATF rules. That’s because she had to start the marathon from Houston’s B corral, a second wave of runners that goes off 12 minutes after the A corral.
quote:
She had run track and cross country at Columbia University, and during her final outdoor year in 2019, she ran 16:17 for 5,000 meters
quote:
On November 11, Gregoire registered for the race and asked to be placed in the A corral, putting down a goal time of 2:44:00. As proof of her fitness, she provided her track personal bests from Columbia and her Strava data. Nine days later, Houston Marathon officials denied her request to be placed in the A corral because the results she submitted could not be verified.
quote:
Houston officials look only at road race times when deciding who gets into the A corral. Those time standards are 4:00 for the marathon, 1:56:00 for the half marathon, and 52:00 for the 10K.
quote:
Her chip time put her in results as the 21st overall woman.

On social media, Gregoire received an outpouring of support. Coach Kevin Hanson of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project offered to pay for Gregoire’s travel expenses so she can compete in the Georgia Marathon, the community race the day after the Trials.

Houston fricked up IMO, but she had plenty of time to go out and do a fun run 10k, shove it in their faces and say "how bout now?".
Let's be a little honest, if she thought she was going to get the trial time, she would have tried a little harder to get the better corral.

I agree with Burt.
Also for the OP, runners like Houston because the course is flat. That is why they choose Houston rather than LA to try to qualify.

Salmon & Burt are right here.
Bigger picture, it shows the "woe is me" mentality of society & running to social media for mollycoddling.
I'm a 36 year old office worker & unathletic scrub, who has been running less than two years, and I was approved for a bib in the "A" corral.
If she had any desire to really qualify, any desire to really participate at an elite level, she would have been easily able to get this done. Seems like she enjoyed the 15 seconds of internet stardom more.

IMO, it is not on Houston. But why running a certain time is not good enough? Didn't a woman do well in the Boston Marathon last year and they didn't want to give her any honor because she didn't start with the elite group? IMO, if you are going to post a superior time, it is harder, thus MORE worthy, to do so in a slower corral group.

not on Houston.
The only reason I truly think it's on Houston in the end is that they refused to take legit NCAA times in lieu of. "Has to be a road race" is a strange hill to die on when the "elite coral" starts at sub 4 hours.

Saw a letsrun thread a few weeks back where someone figured out from her Strava that she ran an NYRR half but with someone else’s bib, so all of this could’ve been avoided had she just run under her own name (and her winnings would’ve covered the entrance fee)
But ultimately think USTAF is being silly

quote:Or the 1:56 half. I could have qualified for the A corral, and my fastest marathon is about 4:29. She'd fly past me
