I'm not carnivore, but I've been keto for over a year now. I don't run any super long distances but once a month or so I'll run trails for a couple of hours. I don't change anything about my diet leading up to it. I found I'm better off sticking to it than carb loading the evening before. I usually eat pizza afterwards, though .

I'll bring a bag of pork rinds or pecans in case I get hungry on the run.

Thank you so much for this in-depth explanation!! And for the frozen shoulder, yes the doctor's eyes almost popped out of his head whenever I raised my arms above my head. He said praise Jesus and this is amazing. Again thank you for the explanation

I’ve run a marathon on ketones. I was in deep ketosis and actually ran fasted. Fueled with ketone ester (not salts).
Lots of electrolytes and water obviously.
Long distance, relatively flat runs are doable if you aren’t trying for some great time.

These days for races or intense mountain runs, I use dextrose packs and ketone esters and just burn off the carbs.

Do you follow Zach Bitter?

No I haven't followed him, but I will. And I'm definitely going to check into these packs that you were talking about. Thank you

Bitter is an insane ultra runner. He’s on the Dr. Shawn Baker podcast (human performance outliers or something like that). Haven’t listened in years.

Since having kids I haven’t been great with my running or diet. Just surviving. But I used to do experiments with what I could do without carbs.
It showed me our bodies are amazingly metabolically flexible.

I use dextrose (glucose) gels for the dual-fuel thing bc they’re instant energy and burn off and you can get back into nutritional ketosis (to the extent one cares about that) instantly.

One thing to be really careful with when using ketone esters is dehydration. It’s real. I almost didn’t finish the Golden Leaf in Aspen bc of a cramp. Literally couldn’t walk for a bit. Be careful.

If it's distance running, just keep doing what you are doing. If it's a 5k, have a cup of coffee.

I find that it's MUCH easier to get into full ketosis by fasting and going to ONE meal a day. You won't be able to over eat or push the limit if you do that and your body will work wonders with it. I feel so much better when I'm fasting 18 hrs and damn everything tastes so much better. After about 3 days of that you should be in full ketosis.

Not a runner but a sometimes cyclist. I have been in some state of ketosis usually. I did carnivore for a while also.

What i noticed was while in heavy ketosis I could ride farther. While not in ketosis I had a faster burst, but would usually give out quicker. My best was being in ketosis, but doing about 70 -100 grams of carbs before the ride. I seemed to have some juice for the bursts while having better endurance.
