I need a rec too. ASICS GT 2000 5 has been my go to shoe for the past year. It’s the only shoe I’ve ever had long term success in and now I’m training for a marathon.
But they upgraded to the GT 2000 6, and it has some bad reviews.
I’m terrified I’m going to grab a new shoe and regress. I certainly don’t have the money to try out multiple running shoes.

I’m a big fan of both Mizuno and Brooks. I’m currently on my second pair of Brooks Ghost. Prior to that, I wore Mixuno Wave Riders. Both the Ghost and Wave Riders are very light and neutral with a soft cushion which adapts to your stride. I would recommend either of those shoes.

Go to a running store and get fitted

If you like lots of padding, try Hoka One One Clifton 4's. They are last year's model and you can get them on clearance from Active.com for $79 right now.

I agree about fixed pricing but once you find a shoe and brand that works for you, I periodically look at Dick’s and Academy. The staff there doesn’t know what they are talking about IMO. But, I have found my shoes at a significant discount doing this.
BTW I like ASICS and Brooks.

I tried on the Ghost 11s the other day and they felt amazing. I can’t justify getting them until I wear out my Kayano 24s but they looked and felt like they could be the best running shoe I’ve tried on in 5 years. Maybe ever

Any recommendations on shoes for track/speed work? Looking online is a bit overwhelming. I’d like to at least get a handful of recs and then attempt to find them around town to try on. Currently using Ghost 11’s for pavement pounding, longer distances.

Prices are essentially fixed, so you aren't paying more for them locally than what you'd pay online.
True, but when you know the make/model you like and the size, you can keep buying last years model and save dough. I recently got the NB 860v7 and Brooks GTS 17 for $80ish each.

Bump.
This thread really should get a sticky.
In the quiver:
Zoom Fly. This is my 15K plus racer excellent shoe but the Lunarlon sole doesn't have the life span for a everyday shoe. Energy return is crazy good. They have a plate in them so most casual runners will find them too stiff.
Altra Escalante. Ground pounder that's taken over for my Energy Boosts. Everyday trainer.
Salomon Sense Ride. Trail shoe that is serviceable on the roads. This is my trail racer. Mid-sole is stiffer than other trail shoes but that's the way I prefer trail shoes.
New Balance 1500v4. 10K and under racer and speed work shoe. Stiff sole good return feels lighter than it is. This shoe is fast. Mid-sole is very thin and keeps you closer to the ground.
Adidas Boost. Mine are the energy boost. Everyday running shoe that got the bulk of my miles when training. Boost is a great long run shoe. Awesome energy return. This is the shoe I'd recommend to the casual runner. They're crazy expensive but you can last year's models for well under 100.
If money were no object I'd get the Nike Pegasus Turbo or the new Nike 4% that is about to drop and would have my eye on the Adidas sub 2 for speed work.

Boost
Bought a pair of Solar Boost a few weeks ago for pavement pounding and love them. Supposed to be really durable also. Rotate them and Brooks Ghost 11 for everyday use. I have a pair of Escalante on the way (not the 1.5, previous version). Anxious to add them to the rotation. I use NB Minimus for speed/treadmill/track work.
I will check out the Salomon Sense Ride for a pavement/trail crossover. Most of the trails I will be running have some pavement mixed in, or will need to run pavement to get to them. (once the weather gets cooler) Any other recs for a crossover to try out?

crossovers
Pure Boost All Terrain maybe, they are on sale right now (75). I have a pair of regular pure boosts just to wear around and I love them.
Three things you should know about them:
They have a fold over tongue
They are heavy (12oz)
They do not have an insole
There are a few offerings from New Balance that might fit the bill too like the Gobi v2.
If you're like me, you might not do a lot of trail stuff and the stuff you do is pretty tame so you want something cheep. I went with the Sense Ride because they felt pretty good and are under a hundred right now.

Yep, pretty much. Not too many options around BR, so really just hit trails to swap it up and get some different training. Thanks, I’ll check your recs out.
How is Salomon sizing? I wear a 10 in Adidas, are you the same in the Boost as the Sense Ride?

They are true to size. So my experience is that if you're a 10 in Adidas, you'll be a 10 on the Sense Ride. I think the ride has a 75% true to size rating.

Just ordered a pair, I think I'm good for awhile with plenty of new soles in the closet.

So.... I bought a pair of Skechers today. Felt really weird and like an amateur because they look like typical Skechers.
$20 at Burke’s and it’s one of the top rated shoes on run repeat.
Pretty interested to see how these will work out. If they suck, I’m only out $20
#2 on runrepeat

I've wondered what those are all about since the started showing up stop the RR rankings. Interested to hear. Can't say I've ever bought a pair of Sketcher for any reason, ha.

No shame in that. Skechers has become legit. Runner's World and many others consider the Go Run 7 the best shoe this year for grinding out miles.
I tend to take the run repeat reviews with a grain of salt because their composite rankings are usually gathered from casual runners, the result being higher rated shoes tend to be very soft.
Meb Keflezighi races in Skechers and he ain't no frickin amateur I can tell you.

True dat. Love Meb. Such a good dude for the sport. We’ll see how it goes. I’m still a NB homer at heart and always will be.
They had some wacky gomebs as well on sale but I just couldn’t bring myself to wear them in public.
ETA: I will say this, the 600s I got are comfortable AF. No idea if they can hold up for a single mile yet but they’re
soft. My son put his foot in there and said he wanted some just because of the cushion.
