I was doing shoulders yesterday, and for some reason woke up with lower back pain. May have been from leaning over to replace the dumbbells on the rack after shrugs.

What remedies do you use for lower back pain, because frick!

Get an MRI. It's the only way to find out whats wrong. I hurt mine last May and went to the Dr in July. He ordered an xray and told me I had a strained ligament and to rest for a month. I told my wife and she informed me that the Dr. just blew me off because you cannot tell anything from an xray. I didnt listen to her, and began doing squats again after a month of rest. 2nd week back, I felt severe pain in my back. After a month of it, I went back to the Dr and told him to schedule an MRI. Back surgery took place in November.

Here is a video on some basic lower back stretches.

My lower back sore today, but I cycled a shitload of 135lb cleans yesterday, and I’m feeling the affects today.

Also get yourself a nice roller and stretch your lower back out. I was using my rumble roller earlier today and it helped me.

Supplementing taurine usually helps alleviate lower back pumps for me. It may help you.

Heat shock proteins (sauna). Cold shock proteins (cold shower/ice bath). Anti inflammatory supplements/diet. Go lighter with the weights if you haven’t mastered technique first. Better warm up sets. Yoga/Stretching. Even simply applying an ice pack to the tender areas can do wonders.

I'd start with here and anti-inflammatories. See a doc if you genuinely think there might be a spinal issue.

Generally, spinal stuff will radiate up and down.

Been here many times.

There is a very high chance it is just muscular. If you did not feel an immediate pop or quick pain, you strained or inflamed some muscles more than likely.

Rest, anti-inflamatory meds are your best bet. Do the stretching exercises listed in this thread.

If you popped/ruptured a disc the pain would be different. Usually feel it running down the leg as well. X-Rays are worthless and you would need an MRI to see the details in the spinal cord.

You would need phys-therapy for some time to address that.

What surgery did you have. I’ve got a impingement on S1. Recommending a discectomy (cut off the portion Pressing on nerve) but am afraid of back surgery.
Results were good?

I had a discectomy. I had it on Veterans Day ( Monday) and was back at work the following Monday. I had to stand up at my desk for three weeks which was hard but worth it. I had a herniated L5 and spinal impingement on L4. The Dr. told me the impingement was of more concern. It took more cutting and pulling. It was an easy operation. I was going home by 2:30, the afternoon I arrived. I feel a lot better. The pain before surgery was bad and it limited me from doing a lot. I began walking two days after surgery and began doing pull-ups and dips around Christmas. I can still feel a little sciatic pain on occasion but it isnt bad. I'll be back to jogging and heavier lifting by May 1. I'm not doing barbell squats and dead lifts again but at my age, it's no big deal. The Dr. did say that the odds were at least 50/50 that I would need surgery again, within 15 years. Dont know why but it is worth it to have the operation.

Is it just localized pain, or is it radiating down one or both legs? Does your spine feel unstable?
