Harvey Lewis has won Big Dog’s Backyard Ultra — one of the most impressive athletic accomplishments ever. Here's how it works: Competitors run a 4.16-mile (6.7km) loop every hour over hilly terrain. If they complete their lap in under an hour, they can use the remaining time to eat, drink, sleep, and recover. However, they must begin the next loop at the start of the next hour — and keep repeating this until they can't continue any longer. The race has no set end and finishes when only one person is left able to run, the rest having pulled out through exhaustion injury, or lack of sleep. But here's the craziest part... This year's race went on for 108 hours. That means Harvey Lewis ran 4 miles...every hour...for nearly FIVE STRAIGHT DAYS. • 108 hours of running • 450 miles covered • New World Record At one point he was taking 60-second naps before starting his next lap! That's absolutely insane.

been on a good streak lately.
Got 13 in at 6:50 average Sunday; 2 x 2mile (11:30,11:12), 2 x mile (5:34, 5:28) Monday; 6 recovery at 7:20 pace Tuesday; 7.25 at 6:40 pace yesterday. Hoping to make a crack at 1:15 or so for the half next saturday

Nice. I mean, I feel totally inept every time you post some of your stats, but that's on me.

I apologize if this has been addressed at some point, but I'm just starting to train for a half marathon. Are there any supplements that are good to take while training or before runs?

Depends on how active you’ve been. A good multivitamin if some sort probably isn’t a bad idea to start. From there pay attention to your body. If you start tailing off bad in workouts/runs you could need iron or some other supplement. Just a matter of paying attention to your body and going to a dr./specialist if something seems off during training.

For reference I don’t take anything accept for the occasional iron supplement as my body sometimes struggles there but I also realize I’d probably feel a whole lot better most of the time if I did.

eh I wouldn’t say that. As long as you’re out doing something you’re doing better than most. It just feels good on my end to throw out times somewhere where it’s appreciated as a lot of my friends that get it are either in better shape than me or working with athletes that are.

ETA: I’m going to time trial a 5k at rim rock farm xc course this afternoon. Taking my high school team I coach there for the Kansas state meet tomorrow.

Dropped 18:37 last friday. Everything after mile 2 on that course is pure hell. So many hills. Was on pace for 17:30 or so through the mile and then the wheels fell off the wagon.

Have a half in Salina, Ks. on deck for Saturday.

Anyone running New York? Saw a guy in an LSU shirt running the BITR Shakeout Run on Instagram just now.

Ran 1:16:49 officially. Seems across the board everyone had the course about 200 or so meters long so don’t know if that changes anything (my watch sucks and always runs short so )

Yea was on pace early but the wheels fell off. Honestly 1:15 was probably lofty since I only trained solidly for 6ish weeks for this. Also took out way too hard. Came through the mile at like 5:32 or something dumb like that.

Glad I can finally post here! Completed my first half this Saturday in Hollywood Beach, FL. It was rainy, windy, and humid, so I was nervous and just wanted to finish. Came in at 1:55 and felt great! Looking forward to a cooler, better weather run in February. Not as fast as most, but at 42 with old catcher knees, I’ll take it!!!

Did 30 miles on the Pinhoti Trail (Alabama) this weekend while pacing a friend for his 1st 100 miler. I got in 5k elevation gain in those 30 miles. This is a beautiful and tough course. I plan to try the full 100 there next year if I don't get in the Western States lotto.

Pacing a first timer is great. Hopefully your friend had a great experience. Maybe we can have a TD party at western states next year. i've got 2 tickets and GF has 4. Its pretty much the only 100-miler I still truly want to run.

If you don't get in and are looking for a race next year check out grindstone. It has option of 100 mile or 100k. 100k is actually 65 miles and 11k gain with very reasonable 18hr cutoff.
