Really? I don't mind my headlamp at all.

I'll admit the one I have is cheap, but it's a bit front heavy. Hate it bouncing around in the slightest, so the strap is tightened up a bit. On certain runs it gives me a headache. Where I run, there are quite a few other people on the trail after dark. If I come face to face, I have to stare off to the side not to blind them. I find myself taking it off and just running with it as a hand held often. I had one that was a bit better as far as weight and stuff, but it corroded through from sweat. I'm sure I could find a good comfortable one, but the hand held doesn't bother me.

I would certainly mind carrying something in my hand like that though.

I will carry a water in a hand carrier for long runs on necessity

Rarely are my night runs more than 4 or so miles. At most it will be 8. Not short, but not the hardest to carry. But just like with my Nathan water bottle, this little hand harness pretty much does all the holding for you. Don't really have to grip it at all. I couldn't run having to hold a water bottle. The weight is still there, but your hand is pretty much open.

I like that I can aim a handheld too. Can just point where my eyes are looking quickly instead of aiming the whole head.

My wife bought me some goofy foot flasher thingies that go on heel. One fell off somewhere on a long rainy run. I doubt I'll replace.

I always run w a hat, and my camping headlamps are light but still annoying. I need a little lightweight clip on. My neighborhood is good for night running as long as I stick to streets and not sidewalks.

This summer needs to gtfo. I'm going to do my 5k race route + miles before and after at dusk.

Had 2 miles of cross training, running option today on the plan. Swimming was recommended, but no pool at my gym and no real access to a pool on the fly. Like I've been doing on this training day throughout the program, I opted for speed work.

I hit the treadmill and did 10 x 1' sprint/1' jog @ 3% incline. 5' warm up/cool down. Did some stretching/core work afterward.

REI had em on sale for 65 yesterday. Bought them on the spot with free shipping to boot. Might want to check that out.

Just grabbed a pair. Of course I didn't stop there. Ended up hitting the outlet section and spent $160 total.

Haha. I'm a sucker for an outlet. I was addicted to Steep n Cheap back when it first started, and "deal a minute" scam was new. What's funny is, I got a giant Timbuk2 messenger and some Chacos in Aug 2010, and that was about my last steep and cheap purchase, until... a couple weeks ago when I bought replacement chacos and a smaller timbuk2 on there (no longer the timed deal format--just Backcountry outlet).

Anyway, csb. The dew point is killer in Atlanta this eve. Did my 5k route, starting from around the middle point bc closer to house than start/finish point. If it's cool and lower dew point by mid-Oct I feel good about 20 min fin.

1 mile warm up 4x400 ith 2 minutes rest. Finished off with an easy cool down to end at 4 miles total including the walking between 400's.

Was supposed to just run an easy mile than hit up another 4x400,but squats and deadlifts the day before have me tight and sore. I guess I didn't realize I hadn't had a leg day in the gym in 2 weeks and it affected me more than I thought. Plus first day of intervals in a looooooong time. Will finish it all next time. Going to be a fun 5 miler today.

I'm sure you've discussed this before, but what is your general weight routine?

I haven't taken the time to digest the wealth of weight-training knowledge on here. I seriously want someone to tell me: "Do this 3x a week for 30-45 mins (pref 30)' and you're good."

My only goals are preserving lean muscle mass as I hit mid-40s and increasing strength for skiing, climbing etc. And I don't want to screw up my running.

How much would you all think is too much for a running coach? I’m meeting with one today that owns a facility. Includes personal training, TRX classes, and personalized nutrition/training plans. Plus group runs and race discounts.

He and his coaches are some of the only ones I’ve found that have legit credentials outside of experience and good times. Seems like anyone who can run a sub-4 hour marathon thinks they’re qualified to be a running coach. I want someone who has experience with injury prevention and an understanding of fixing form problems.

I imagine this is going to be pricey but I just can’t keep having runs like this morning.

4 miles. 49 minutes total.

Yeah, I walked 1.5 minutes to the start point and stopped to tie my shoes. There are two small hills on the loop. So subtract what? 5 minutes? 11 minutes/mile? At 33 years old running almost 30 miles a week? When I felt like I was pushing it?

Something’s off.

Depends on what you get out of it. I paid $220 a month for a triathlon coach, but they had a weekly track night, 4 coached swim sessions a week, seminars on recovery/nutrition/transition/race day prep/etc.. Also got a lot of deals on equipment through their sponsors, such as a wetsuit for under $100. The coaching was meh to be honest. He got me to the finish line in a respectable manner, and that's all I was looking for. But for someone really pushing performance, I'd look elsewhere. Overall wasn't upset about the money spent, but I know more now and would likely shop coaches harder. The group training I got out of it was really great though.

There's a guy down the street from me who coached D1 running. He charges $125 a month for just running. $150 and you get some one on one coaching in person as well. He's doing this on the side and keeps it pretty small. I actually like that (was kind of just a number with the other coaching group). For someone with a facility and a lot of actual face to face coaching, I'd say somewhere in that 150-200 a month range. At least where I'm located.

Flip side is there is almost no reason to need someone where you live unless you really get something out of face to face training. One of the tri coaches I "interviewed" was out of Chicago and we started out by chatting on a message board. Might reach out again around December as I really liked his approach. Now that I'm no longer doing Ironman distance races, I will do all bike rides indoors and I can self motivate through 2500 yds of swimming. My coach can put my workout in training peaks and I'm good to go. For the 6 hour bikes and long swim sessions, having a coach there with others doing the same workout was huge though, so it was a benefit to have a local coach for IM.

I've only done this once so far and only got through the bold when wife called in the middle of the workout and reminded me I had to pick up my son from daycare since she had to work late.....whoops

quote:

-5x7 squat
-5x7 deadlift
-5x7 dumbbell press

-3x10 lat pull down
-3x10 seated row
-3x10 front shoulder raises
-3x10 lateral shoulder raises
-5x7 preacher curls
-5x"whatever I can do" tricep dips
-alternate ab workouts

Workouts I did took the longest time as I take a lot of recovery between sets (~2 min) on those. Was about 45 minutes with just that. Probably another 30-40 to fit in all the rest. I only plan to go once a week. 4 days running, 1 day cross training, 1 day in the gym, one day completely off. I'll probably go a second time this week though to finish off the things I didn't do on Tuesday.

That’s what I’m worried about but expecting. That’s too pricey for me honestly. Maybe just running with a group would help.

I got a lot out of having a coach. At the same time, it's not like the guy was a genius. You can do a lot of research yourself. If you are honest with yourself (truthful about when you are slacking or when you are pushing too hard), then they aren't a necessity for your average joe. The experience helps, but like you said, it's pricey. I was all in on the Ironman goal financially, so I went for it. Stopped paying afterwards though.

Sometimes your body just needs a break. Happens all the time. Take a day or two off. You may not hit your mileage. But if you are feeling that off, it's probably garbage mileage anyway.

4.25 easy/recovery this morning @ 8:50 pace. Felt good to shake the soreness from yesterday's long run.

That sounds good. Yeah 3x a week for me is probably too much. I was blessed with a decent build without doing much. Not bragging, because I def have to ability to cover it all up with body fat, as demonstrated during ages 28 through 39 or so. I just always here about the rapid muscle loss as we age and feel I should be doing a little something extra.

Thanks for the input!

I'm in advice-seeking mode today. I'm sure you mentioned this, but this threae has gotten long, what program are you using? I've gone pretty much helter skelter lately.

For my 20 min 5k goal I'm running the course with a mile from/two house as much as possible over next 6 weeks but doing it in various ways, including some intervals and fartleks. Then doing a 30kish run per week.

This isn't based on anything at all. Just doing it. Make the meme.

Bonk! 4th garbage run in a row so I feel ya.

If I could guess, mine is a perfect storm of my body giving out from an entire summer of afternoon runs, shoes starting to go bust even though I've only got about 300ish on them, nerves from the first race this weekend, and I started taking glucosamine chondroitin and my body just isn't having it.

Tomorrow I'll get a slow 2-3 and end it with about 5-6 strides and hope I can muster something on race day Saturday.

I'll tell you this, the hardest thing is going to get myself out of my own head before Saturday.
