My 14 year old son has just started seriously working out (lifting program with the school for football). About 2 months ago, he could barely do 70 lbs. on flat bench. He just broke the 135 lbs. milestone. I remember being happy breaking 225, 315, and 405. But nothing could top that first time you lift a plate on each side. And you'll never have a jump like that in weight for the rest of your life (unless you go from natty to the shot).

"I remember being happy breaking 225, 315, and 405."

Not so subtle brag. :)

I was much happier benching 225 than I was 135 I'll tell ya that.

The percent of the entire male population that can bench 225 has to be less than .1%. It’s a pretty elite club, all things considered.

You think it is that low? That is terrible but I agree with the other poster when I was able to hit 225 for 10 reps without dying I was stoked!

I think so. Go to the beach and look around at the guys there. Half are so embarrassed of their physique they are wearing shirts. None of those guys are even benching 135. The ones that aren't a tub of lard have no appreciable muscle mass. It takes at least a little appreciable muscle mass to press 225. You have to train regularly to hit that, no one comes off the street pressing 225.

Obviously, at the gym the percentage is higher. On the internet, 90% of men can bench 3 plates.

That is nuts dude and sad at the same time. Soy boy land for real. My 16 year old son hit a new PR not that long ago doing 275 and can do 225 at the minimum of 5 times.

at the bolded part

I have a hard time believing that too, but I guess it's because we who go to the gym see people lifting 225 lbs. on the regular.

I can relate as watched a daughter that got into strength training with her ACL recovery get strong so quick. It was awesome! Have a son now in similar situation as yours and love to see him progressing so quickly. It has gotten me back into weight lifting as I work out with both of them so an added bonus.

I've heard this. I guess if you count people who never lifted. What about for those who do?
