My buddy is pushing me hard to train for a triathlon and I just started swimming again to train. I haven't swam since I was a kid, and my technique is trash. I feel like I'm going to drown.
I watched a few videos but am looking for other recommendations. I guess I could always doggie paddle through it.

I have never had luck with videos. It could be just the mental factor of not wanting to disappoint my coach by rescheduling or not 'practicing', but pre-paying a coach for a bunch of spaced out lessons has been a huge motivator for me. If I didn't have access to a coach, I would have found it helpful to have a friend watching me to see if I'm actually doing/correcting the specific things the videos are suggesting.

Try working on your crawl (upper body) and scissor kicks (lower body) separately. Use a kick board to do this. Then, put it together. People tend to have the hardest time with keeping their face down in the water and just turning the had to the side for a breath after so many strokes. If you hold your head back and out of the water, it will throw off the coordination between you upper and lower body and cause you to waste a ton of energy.

Don’t swim flat. As in face down.
You want to rotate as you pull
A lot of each strike you should almost be on your side.

The book Total Immersion helped me. Slowing everything down also helped a ton. I would pretty much try to sprint every lap.
Timed myself going slow and there wasn’t much of a time difference and I could go much longer.
