My lungs have always sucked, I've always generally had problems with my breathing keeping up with the rest of my body. I had some childhood asthma, but I was over it pretty early, never on long term meds, just a rescue inhaler when needed. The lungs have just been the limiting factor if there was one.

After struggling with runs in the summer and with allergies, I tried doing 2 puffs of Albuterol before a run, it helped a lot. It just opens things up, like it's supposed to. When I don't do it, I have to go slower and the breathing sucks. Doesn't matter as much in good weather and air quality.

Any natural ideas for opening the lungs up? Asking because I tried one, some menthol smelling something my wife found, and it smelled fine but didn't do jack. Would love to breathe easier without Albuterol.

As someone with "childhood asthma" it may be under control, and not severe... but it wasnt (over) your lungs are still dealing with asthma man

Not sure about natural cures, but there's no shame in taking a puff of Albuterol if that helps you. There's a reason pro cyclists try to get an asthma script!

It was a daily thing for a short time as a kid. Now, it's basically just heavy cardio. I can slow down to a 10 minute pace and I'm fine. Cycling up and down hills I'm fine. Mid 50s good air quality and I'm mostly fine running. The lungs just don't cut it at a running pace a lot of the time, the inhaler balances out the legs and lungs battle to where both are even.

If you have a stationary cycle or rower, just a very slow, methodical warm up of 3 to 5 minutes (hell, maybe 7 or 8 if you're getting older) is something to try. And I mean "slow', meaning you don't even want to push your heart and respiration rate much, just that depth of inhalation so that all that gets "pre" expanded.

Failing that, perhaps do a very light jog to warm up before the "real" run. Just enough to get the blood flowing and the lungs expanding before you actually tax them.

(ETA: And, as far as Albuterol - I know it is cavalier to suggest we pretty much know as much as we can know about shite tons of people using a lot of it. I don't think there are any studies showing it, beyond the fact you have to have something bad to need it, shortens life or causes negative outcomes merely by regular use. Ergo, if you need it, use it, IMHO.)

I ran cold on PT test for years, which is stupid.

3 or 4 minutes of light jogging prior to main event always reduced 2 mile time by 35-45 seconds. It works.

I use a Primatene mist inhaler, you can get it over the counter. Also use a high menthol cough drop when I do cardio, Vicks Vapo Cools.

This. I do long slow strokes on the rower and time deep breathes.

A good warmup is key, especially now that I'm in my 40s. I got a Peloton at Christmas of 2021, and jumped into the beginner rides, and while most of them were just 20-30 minutes, they really lacked a good warmup. I'm doing zone training now, and all of the warmups in those are at least 10 minutes. It gets a little boring doing the same type warmup each time, but it works. It starts with just moving your legs at a light resistance, then gets into some other stuff, and a slow 3-4 minute build of increasing the intensity. Once all that is done, the actual work portion of the ride starts. Way better than just jumping into exercising. If I know it is going to be a longer session, I might do some stretches or even another warmup ride first. Gotta prime the pump a little.

Buy a powerbreathe apparatus. I just found out about them recently and it’s been a game changer. Not sure why it’s not more popular tbh
