Is sugar bad for muscle gains/growth?

I have a sweet tooth and munch on a handful of gummy bears or scoop or two of ice cream daily. Is this detrimental to my muscle growth or shouldn't be a problem as long as it's in moderation?

I wouldn’t say it’s detrimental to muscle growth in and of itself, but it’s not optimal and can lead to fat gain. Moderation is the key. What you need to do is actively count your calorie and macro intake so that you know what your intake is. That way, you can budget in your sweets and stay on track with your goals.

Depends on your goals. If you are skinny and have trouble eating enough calories it’s a great way to get more calories for less fullness.
On the other hand if you’re overweight you probably want to avoid calorie dense foods like sweets to feel more full for less calories
Building muscle takes sufficient protein intake and sufficient overall calorie intake

Thanks for the insight guys. I'm comfortable were im at weight wise, but I was just wondering if eating some sweets on days I lift would have a negative result on my growth. Sounds like I'll be fine

One of the fittest, strongest guys I've ever met eats those little packets of Sweet Tarts every day. I forget why exactly. Something to do with timing a specific amount of sugar intake in relation to his lifting schedule.

The biggest problems with sugar is that it comes from food sources that are generally processed and devoid of nutrients, and is not very satiating. As a result, it usually leads to fat gain and over time can cause diabetes when chronically consumed in high quantities. In moderation, it isn't going to be a problem for an active, healthy person. It isn't going to counteract your individual workouts, but it might undermine your goals if you regularly indulge.

There’s nothing inherently bad about sugar in terms of muscle building. It’s just another calorie.
Problems happen when too much sugar causes lethargy, poor sleep, and unwanted weight gain. Sugar - especially in refined, concentrated forms - can cause insulin issues pretty quickly.

Substitute shitty gummy bears with a nice brick of dark chocolate.
