Insomnia and low carb/low calorie diet

Has anyone experienced severe insomnia when switching to a low carb, low calorie diet? I’ve been dieting for three months now and working out for two months and lately I can’t sleep to sleep past 2 or 3 am no matter how worn out I am. Im currently eating about 100 to 150 grams of carbs and roughly 180 to 200 in protein.

What are your calories, weight, age? Sometimes I have trouble sleeping when I’m cutting if I put the calories too low. Your body thinks your time would better be spent finding/hunting food opposed to sleeping.

Try drinking more water... this usually helps for me. Sometimes you have to drink an assload to fall asleep though but its the common denominator

Yes low carb diets/fasting increases your adrenaline and this can contribute to insomnia.

I’m 34, 5’8” and 190 pounds (down from 220). I do cardio and strength train 5 days a week. I’ve been upping my carbs and calories this week to try and get some sleep. I was taking in about 1700 to 2000 calories a day and now I’m shooting for about 2200. I drink plenty of water, which is another problem I’m having, I’m pissing every hour at night so I really don’t want to consume any more water than I already am.

When you figure it out, update this thread. I’m over getting 4-5 hours of sleep at night due to early waking.

I would pin your trouble sleeping on being overweight or seemingly having some sort of bladder problem before blaming it on eating 100 carbs a day.

Id get it figured out, but there's seemingly much more likely culprits than your carb intake.

Hes almost the same age, height, and weight as I am, so I wouldnt contribute it to his size, especially if he was sleeping fine at 220 (which I am only assuming).

Id first look at what he has changed since he was consistently sleeping well. Diet and exercise routine has changed from nothing to working out often, and eating differently. Also, its possible his caffeine intake may have gone up if he is taking preworkouts now. Two things that hurt my sleep pattern is taking a preworkout too late in the day, and working out too close to bedtime.

Every actual low carber I've known (including myself) reported greatly improved sleep (really, greatly improved everything.)

It’s lower than the average western diet. And certainly lower than what I was eating previously.

To answer some other questions, I have had my bloodwork done and a urinalysis and both were fine. I drink a cup of coffee In the morning and pre workout as well and I’ve never worked out past 3 or 4 pm. And yes, I slept great at 220.
