I'm not a breakfast eater, so the IF program seems a natural fit for me. However, I do enjoy morning coffee with sugar free creamer and Stevia/Truvia. Will the creamer or Stevia take my body out of the fasted state? I know black coffee won't, but what about these coffee additions?

My understanding is that ANY non-water ingested substance will cause at least some metabolic response.

Anything other than black coffee/water will remove you from a fasted state.

even black coffee does. but if you are doing IF for body composition changes, don't worry about that crap. enjoy the coffee. Do you really think 20 cals a day is going to keep you from getting a 6 pack?

I found this on the internet:
Martin Berkhan says anything over 50cal would violate his 16/8 leangains protocol; I've seen others say as little as 20cal. Thus, a conservative splash of cream no more than 20-50cal is probably fine.

Here's an exact quote from Berkhan's website: No calories are to be ingested during the fasted phase, though coffee, calorie free sweeteners, diet soda and sugar free gum are ok (even though they might contain trace amount of calories). A tiny splash of milk in your coffee won’t affect anything either (½-1 teaspoon of milk per cup at the most - use sparingly and sensibly if you drink a lot of coffee). Neither will sugar free gum in moderation (~20 g).

martin is focused from strictly a body composition side of things and he is right, he now says 30 cals is the limit. from a health stand point anything but water breaks the fast.

i've been doing one meal a day pretty consistently for a few months now. i really didn't intend to. i just started increasing my fast and found i wasn't hungry. and i've been pretty busy and just haven't stopped to eat.

i do however drink black coffee all day long. I've been doing some blood ketone tests to see what affects my levels, and i don't find black coffee does anything. MCT oil actually increases it. i haven't tested with butter or heavy cream. i will and report back.

of course blood ketones are an exact proxy for autophagy, but still a good indicator of fast-breaking in my context.
