Hurt myself this evening running. I planted funny on my right leg, and got a piercing pain where my right hip meets my upper thigh (best I can describe).

Has anyone experienced this?

I’m an avid runner, and I know when I get a foot injury, or when my IT Band acts up. I feel I can come pretty close to diagnosing the problem and how to fix it/prevent it in the future.

This injury scares me, because I don’t have any idea how to avoid it in the future and when I’ll be back to normal.

outside, inside front, back?

Get baseball and roll around on it.

Sounds like a hip flexor injury if you aren’t feeling radiating pain or pain in the back also.

I'm 40 now and rarely run sprints anymore. I tried about a week ago after lifting weights and everything was going well until I felt a slight pull in my groin (I think). I immediately stopped and called it a day.

For the next couple of days, I could only feel the pain slightly and not at all while walking normal. I had a basketball game three days after the injury and re-tweaked it immediately but kept playing. The next morning it was much worse. I should probably stay off it for 2-3 weeks but we have our playoff game next week so hoping I can give it a go and then take the 2-3 weeks off.

Hmmmm, it's not on the inside front so I doubt it's the groin. It's hard to diagnose exactly where it's coming from. I'd say front/outside of my hip.

Sounds like a hip flexor. Look up some hip flexor stretches and roll on a foam roller. Don’t do speed until the pain goes away.

I've found i can fix almost those pesky things with hip PT exercises and stretches. And i graduated from rolling to the theragun. I have a homemade one. Magic.

Thanks guys. Mac, do you have any specific exercises and stretches for a hip flexor?

I already do stretching on a foam roller, although I haven't since the injury. The stretching is mainly calfs, quads, and working around the IT band though. So no hip work really.

Any Youtubes you could recommend?

So the injury occurred last Wednesday. Wednesday & Thursday I was in major pain. Friday it was just noticeable, and Sat/Sun it was gone. Yesterday I felt a little discomfort, but I think i'm going to try and knock out 3 miles tomorrow (Wednesday). Wish me luck
