How Serious Is Factor V and Vitamin K Intake?

So I have factor V, its not that common, but its also not rare. Most people who have it just dont know, I happen to know bc my mother nearly died from a blood clot caused by it many years ago and they tested me and found me to have it. Anyways, I havent seen a hematologist in prob 15+ years and I juice 2x a day along with my food. I basically drink the same drink and playing around with a calculator online I see it has 500% of the vitamin K you need daily, if i remove the kale it dips to 100%. Anyways, I know vitamin K is bad for you when you have factor V but Im curious how bad it is and if I should be cutting it out completely?

Mine is

3 large carrots
1 orange
1 cucumber
1 green apple
3 kale
1 tumeric
1 ginger

Well considering I lost 40 lbs over the last year while just replacing 2 meals a day with 2 juices I can't say I see the bad side? I was pre-diabetes, its gone. I had high cholesterol, its gone. I was 240 lbs and im down to 202 right now and Im still eating the same food bc we have a delivery plan that delivers 2 meals a day and all I did was switch 2 meals Id eat on my own to 2 juices mon-fri. We still eat out with our friends on weekends. Are you talking about people who drink nothing but juice? Whats wrong with having 2 meals and 2 juices? The meals we have delivered are 6 oz of protein + 2-3 veggies so I get plenty of food.

Well sure, you got your diet semi under control and reduced your caloric intake. That's why you lost weight and that's why your diabetes and high cholesterol went away, not because of juicing.

When you juice all that fruit, it strips away all the fiber from it. So when you drink it your body processes it immediately as a ready energy source and once you don't use that energy it goes back into storage. If instead, you eat whole fruit and veggies the fiber makes it into a "time released" energy source so your body does not store it. LINK

when you say all that fruit, its just 1 green apple and 1 orange per juice? Those aren't even super high sugar fruits like pineapples or something. Carrots have some sugar too but my issue is I can't really have strictly veggie juices bc of factor K so I try to limit my green intake. I suppose I could do just carrot,ginger,tumeric,and green apple but the thing is you need the cucumber to get the juice volume up to even 10 oz.

Everyone totally whiffed on what you were asking.

Vitamin K is important in activating different clotting factors on your blood (of which factor V is one).

For people who have abnormal clotting factors excess vitamin K can put you more at risk for developing blood clots.

I would probably stay away from it if I were you.

Eta: The vitamin K can also interact with certain anticoagulants. I'm assuming your doctor started you on some?

hey geauxt thanks for the answer. So basically the only time in my life I met a hematologist was when I was a teen 20 years ago and he was simply testing me after my moms DVT scare. When I was found to have it, he started me on simply a daily baby aspirin but then I started taking it every other day bc I was having nose bleeds. He told me he didn't want me taking coumadin like my mom bc I was too young and it was bad for my liver from then.

So its been almost 20 years, I dont know if I should see one or not. I also read that ginger is a blood thinner so I have that everyday + the baby aspirin. Do you think I should go back and see a hematologist?

I would say seeing a doctor would be the wise decision. No offense, but something serious like blood clots shouldn't be left to the TD health and fitness board.

I definitely would see one just to be safe. Just like your mom you'll be at higher risk for forming a DVT, which can lead to a pulmonary embolism (clot breaks off and goes to your lung) which can be fatal.

In my opinion it would be cheap insurance just to go get a check up and have them tell you you're okay and still don't need to be put on a blood thinner.

I mean I've known this for 20 years and it's never been an issue, I don't wanna go see a doctor, a specialist at that, to ask him what I should juice. Factor v isn't some rare disorder, a lot of people have it but most don't know bc it's not something they check for in your annual blood test. I was screened for it bc of my mother, all I'm curious about is if it's terrible for your if your putting 2 anti coagulants like ginger and tumeric in the juice along with a daily baby aspirin. I'm just not a big fan of taking tons of pills, my mom is on countless pills and warfarin is literally what is used to kill rats. I'm not sure I want that in my body to maintain my factor v. My mom had her issue bc of birth control they told her, I remember the doctor telling her birth control is the worst thing any woman can take moreso when they have factor v
