Getting ready for shoulder surgery. Monday WBC was 13k. Normally runs about 10k. This morning it was 16k. This afternoon late it was 17.9K. Ive been rejected for surgery. Given Cipro to take. Any suggestions for follow up to see what is causing this? Any help appreciated.

Not a doctor but I know a little.Do you have any urinary tract discomfort such as burning, frequency, flank pain. Are you coughing or have shortness of breath. How about any abdominal discomfort or diarrhea. How about any hardware in your body such as artificial joints, artificial valve or pacemaker.
Hopefully you had urinalysis, urine culture and chest x-ray.

Did you have blood culture?Friend of mine just got over episode of elevated white count and fever for about a week.He has pacemaker,Dr. was worried about that being source of infection but was ruled out.Had cultures of urine, sputum and blood, all were negative.10 days of antibiotics and he recovered nicely. He was kinda aggravated that cause was never found but he was happy to get over it.

Elevated WBC is usually due to some type of infection, but can also be caused by other things like stress or corticosteroid use. I'm not a doctor, but just something to keep in mind if your work up for an infection doesn't reveal anything.

Have you noticed any new or enlarging lumps or bumps, particularly of your groin, arm pits, or neck?
