I do barbell box step up a lot because it helps with my bike racing.
Seem to hit the glutes nicely.

How bad was your form that you blew out your back that much, even on front squats?

are hack squats out of the question?

i dont know the name of them but a "kick back" or glut machine
hip thrusts?
