Ok.... surely everyone has hit calves when getting back at it and felt great... and then day 2 and 3 hits. Gonna be brutal this week!!

Other than maybe stretching, what's your go-to for tight and sore calves?

You could try an NSAID (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, etc.), or if you want to go with something that's more natural, you could try turmeric or ginger. If you want to go the supplement route, alpha-lipoic acid and/or fish oil may help.

One time I made my calves so sore I could barely walk for a day. It was a random exercise I was just experimenting with one night in the gym. I grabbed a heavy dumbbell and did one-leg calf raises on the bars of some nautilus equipment. I was able to hold onto a bar with my free hand and lean back to hit my calves in an unusual angle. I've tried to replicate that, but I've never been able to get so sore again.

Took a good three days but all good now. Just some seriously good stretching and back at it.

Really sore calves may be the most painful of all the muscles. I've had times that they really hurt to the touch...light touch too.

I just avoid direct work on my calves. I used to get knots the size of golf balls in them. My wife would have to knead them out with Tiger Balm.

Lay down and watch a movie while rocking them on this bad boy:

Stretching and foam rolling feel good but they won't get rid of soreness. I'm not saying not to do those things but the best way to get rid of soreness in general is light, active recovery. For calves would be going for a 10-15 minute walk.
