So I finally went and bought an BG monitor to see where I am as a baseline and after meat and wine. I took lab blood lipid panels a couple of weeks before - one of which was BG at 94 mg/dL. Sure, I've read about BG being higher in the mornings and gluconeogenesis before. I've read about the effects of dry red wine and decided to put them to the test.

My initial purpose was to track everything for a week, but the lancets are a bit too much for my (pussy) hands. So I grabbed two nights of wine consumption, to determine the case - does red wine effect BG?

88 mg/dl, my baseline before eating steak

Remains of a roughly 10oz steak (closer to 12oz)

So 30 minutes after the steak I measured again, same location, 81 mg/dl. I find this to be w/in the error of the monitor of the earlier 88 mg/dl, so BG didn't really budge.

Roughly 6oz of a $15 chianti (dry Italian red)

So roughly 30 minutes after finishing the first 6oz of chianti, a 74 mg/dl came up. A small dip, but not one to raise eyebrows at.

30 minutes after finishing the second 6oz of chianti. 82 mg/dl. Again, not a huge move on the scale.

30 minutes after finishing the third 6oz of chianti. 82 mg/dl as well. My bedtime, I fell asleep afterwards

So today I went ahead and tracked again

A 98 mg/dl at morning. I don't eat breakfast anyways. I hear BG is always elevated in the mornings

79 mg/dl right before lunch

The jump to 100 mg/dl was a surprise, it was ground beef with some spices.

79 mg/dl again before dinner.

95 mg/dl after dinner, so maybe the 100 mg/dl isn't much of a surprise. On to the wine!

The 66 mg/dl was a surprise drop, check on my palm, I checked again on the forearm

Ok, 70 mg/dl is close. The drop was real.

On to the cabernet sauvignon! ~$15 bottle

The 76 mg/dl isn't surprising

77 mg/dl, not too shabby.

I've heard that red wine reduces BG, and my BG doesn't move much in comparison to diabetic patients, but I was surprised by the drop the wine provided after consuming chuck steaks.

My future ideas are 3 buck chuck from Trader Joe's and then whiskey. Should be an adventure.

Nice study. I just wanted to point out that a spreadsheet might have been better on the eyes for research. Those are some big pictures and I can't look at past data very fast and kind of forget.

I agree with the spreadsheet. The idea with the pictures was to tell a story. I'll get the data at the end.

Only for you

No baseline for me earlier, but after a 9oz steak with .5oz butter and the rest of the cabernet sauvignon (2 6oz glasses), 74 mg/dl.

Most of those numbers are the same. All glucose meters are allowed a 20% variance in readings.
