Anyone here traveled abroad for a race? Would love to hear some reviews.

I am toying around with the idea of booking a trip to Europe and doing a race while I am there. I can't decide if it would be a bad idea and ruin the trip or elevate it. My concern is jet lag and then being to beat up after the race to truly enjoy the trip. I would run either a half or full marathon and the plan would be to arrive on Thursday and run on Saturday. In theory it sounds like a great way to start a trip and then be free to explore a new country for the week following the race.

Glad you made this post. I had this exact thought last night on my long run. I've been following a half marathon in Slovenia that popped up on my FB feed one day. Slovenia Full and Half
I'd love to go to England and participate in a Park Run. I see these all the time on my FB feed too.
I'd stick to a half marathon if it were me on vacation. In other words, if I'm on vacation and just want to enter a race, I'd enter a half and just run it, not race it. That way you aren't wiped out afterwards or worried about your performance. Or, you could circle a race a train for it and it just happens to be in Europe.

This ^^^
Don't run all out & don't do a full marathon. Just run a solid 13.1 mile long run surrounded by hundreds of new foreign running buddies

Agree with all of the above. One of the best lessons a life long runner can learn is not trying to run a PR every race or run, and finding and maintaining a comfort pace.

You could mix it up and do a long ruck. Coincidentally enough, I just got a notification from GoRuck about an event (Rogue) in Scotland next month. They have events all over the world, including Spain, Taiwan, etc.

I think the main issue would be the impact of jet lag. I've flown twice (about 9 hours) from Texas to Hawaii to run a marathon and it was no different than running in Chicago for example.

The GoRuck in Normandy would be a dream trip. LINK
